Lighting for desk in corner

Playing bedroom Tetris, we have managed to fit a desk/monitor/chair into ds's small bedroom for studying. The only way it fits in is facing into a corner, with the window behind him. It is a north facing window so glare from window later in the day onto monitor isn't too bad, the blind can be lowered if needed, but sitting in the corner is not idea and a bit miserable.

He has a wall mounted LED lamp over the right hand side of the desk (was originally over his bed), we bought one of these LED lights which causes too many shadows.

I can see lots of lights online, does anyone have any recommendations of lights you have bought/tried for lighting up a corner to make it a pleasant place to study? Ideally would like something to brighten up the corner, no glare and no shadows.. and extra points for space saving in small room!

My sister had some cute wall lights hung from the wall (the ones that have lampshades hung at different heights) that have stick in LED lights in so don't need wiring and can be turned on with a remote!

Like these! Not sure if they'd work, but they take minimal space as on the wall, can change colour / brightness and no wiring required 😊

I'ce had lots of desks usually like them to face into the corner so I can pin stuff up abd stare blankly at it. M. A notice board or just a few cork tiles pinned up make a great board.

I have a spot light which I point at the wall so soft like is reflected back.

Does the desk fill the whole space?

Could you get a floor lamp like a column to provide diffuse light in the corner and then supplement with a desk lamp for detailed work?

Thank you for the replies. @PutinIsAWarCriminal love those industrial lights, and they are very fitting to his interest in engineering, but not sure how they would look on his desk which has limited space.

@sunnyklara there is no space for a floor lamp. He literally has a 1200cm wide desk, with a 26" monitor to attach to the laptop that takes up most of the desk space and enough space for his chair and that is it. One side of the desk is a wall, the other his bed.

We are going up to Ikea next week to get some Eket cubes to put on the wall above the monitor for shelving space for books/folders.

@MrszClaus the wall lights are similar to the light he has on the wall to the right of his desk. It gives light immediately below the light only, the left of the desk is very dark and there are lots of shadows. Perhaps they would be better if placed above the monitor, but worried there would be a bit of glare from the bare bulb being visible.

Tempted by one of these but worried it will be another huge waste of money! 🤦‍♀️

I use a lamp pointed up and into the corner so the light is bounced back off the walls rather than direct.
I put in a very bright daylight led bulb and it really brightens things up.

Ideally you should have a low intensity defuse light that doesn't creat bright or shadowed zones.

How about something like this as a cheaper alternative to the one you were considering?

I got one for my WFH set up and it's been great. It sits above my computer most of the time, parallel to the top of the screen. Range of brightness options and also does cool and warm light. It can be a bit bright at times so I just angle it slightly away from me.

Hummed and hawed about it for ages and eventually went for the one I linked in my second post and overall pleased with it.

Pros:
It takes up barely any desk space.
The clamp doesn't stick out which means the desk can still be flush to the wall.

Because the light is so wide (and it is huge!) there are barely any shadows and it lights up his full 1200cm wide desk very well.

It has a small shield at the front to prevent glare directly in your eyes, and the flexible neck means you can also adjust so there is no glare and it still lights up the working area well.

Cons:
Expensive compared to other lights and it feel like a cheap build quality/plastic, but once in place I don't really notice this.
The controls could be much better for the price.
Ideally the arm could be a couple of inches longer (this is mainly because ds's monitor is set quite high, but not excessively so, as he uses dual screen with his laptop under the monitor).

@Blanketpolicy sorry to revive an old thread but how are you getting on with the light? I have the same dilemma. Does you son have his screens portrait or landscape? I have one of each.

@Iamnotausername ds is still using the light and is happy with it. He has taken to sitting in the dark with only that light on when he studies so there is a bit of shadow as there is no other light source to soften the shadows but it doesnt bother him. It is plastic and cheap feeling but functions well.

Not sure if it would be tall enough for a portrait screen setup. The top of his monitor is 23" from the desk and the light sits just above it, but it is also 11-12" in from the edge of the desk, if it didn't need to come that far in it could probably be a couple of inches taller instead.

This is his very messy desk in his room with no other lights on, for scale the desk is 1200mm wide, 800mm deep. Monitor is 27" and laptop 15". In the photo it looks like the light is hanging lower than the screen, it is just the angle, it is actually about an inch above it and doesnt cause any glare on the screen.
