Has anyone painted old fake dark wood looking kitchen cupboards?
I did a search and saw French if paint was recommended, but just wondering if anyone has done this recently?

I've used zinsser exterior allcoat. You can have it coloured any colour you want. It got excellent coverage and gives a lovely finish if you use a foam roller. It's water based and very easy to use. I've used lots of different paints on dark furniture and this one is the nicest that I've found.

I haven't painted kitchen cupboards but have painted fireplaces, doors, bath, radiators, upvc door frame and other random bits of furniture and I don't rate French chic. All of the places I've used it I've ended up going over it as I've either not liked the finish or it's chipped.

I really like rust-oleum combi colour multi surface paint. It can be colour matched to any colour.

Frenchic makes lovely colours and goes on well ...but...absolutely chips and scratches on every surface I've used it on.

I have used zinsser all coat as well as @Pleaseletmeconfirm mentions and that's very good as well.
This is a good place to source from

Thanks for understanding the autocorrect! 😳
Another question - is water based paint ok on all surfaces? I think the kitchen is mdf.

Rustoleum Kitchen Cupboard paint is great and with a good range of colours.

The wilko kitchen paint is good. I used it on my old dark cupboards. It's really affordable too.
I gave my cupboards a light sand and then washed down with sugar soap. I used 2 coats of their urban grey cupboard paint and it made my doors looks amazing!

I've just used this on am old dresser. Lightly sanded. It had good coverage but I didn't like the finish half as much as the zissner and the zissner was a nicer paint to paint with. Both paints were a satin finish.

If I was painting melamine I'd still do a light sand and I'd get a specific paint fir melamine. There are a few around. I'd prob use a specialist primer. I've used Zissner B-I-N but they might be better ones. I used it because I had it. It worked well. I used foam rollers.

Little Greene Paint Co. Used their ASP (All Surface Primer) first and then their Tom’s Oil Paint (which is, as you’d expect, oil-based).

Goes on smoothly with a brush, no brush marks at all. And the stuff is bomb-proof. No chips, marks etc.

The ASP comes in the same colours as all the paints.

If there is a colour from elsewhere that you really like, as long as you know the RAL code, then LG will mix the colour for you (you can’t order this online, you need to telephone or email them with your order and there’s no extra charge for it).

Rookie question - is it necessary to take doors off kitchen cupboards to paint them to avoid drip marks? I've got some that could do with sprucing up but am slightly nervous of making them look even worse!

I have used Wilkes too , duck egg blue .
It hoes on well and can be wiped down easily.

@StrawberryPot yes take the doors and draw fronts off.i did with all but one of mine ( screws were buggered so I couldn't undo them ) and the difference in the finish was easy to see .

I see a lot mention Zinssser and other paints for kitchens we had ours done by a company and was asked if we would like a Farrow and Ball or Zinsser paint. Explained what they are about and went for Zinsser. I have put the low down on the Zinsser paint here from their site. They also have info on everything about Painting Kitchen Cupboards. After seeing how they apply the 8 Coats yes 8, Iam glad I had them do not me

Zombie thread

Unfortunately wilkos paint can not be bought anymore

ItsRainingTacos79 · 04/11/2023 23:53

@altiara How long are you hoping to keep it? Reason I ask is because it won't be very long lasting. Particularly in a kitchen. I had my kitchen cupboards painted about 6 months ago and already there are chips. Unless the cupboards are real wood, the paint will unfortunately peel easily. I used rustoleum paint in a satin finish. It's fine to wipe clean food splatters and general grease residue but the paint will peel off on high use surfaces quicker than you would expect. I was hoping the cheap refurb would tide me over for a couple of years before I do a proper reconfiguration and renovation but at this rate it looks like I may be repainting every 6 months.
