De-greying an entire house! Starting with bedroom

We are currently buying a new home, which has been beautifully extended/lots of structural work done so nothing for us to do, yay!

however, when redecorating that have turned the entire house GREY. And I mean the entire house; pale grey carpets, grey walls and the worst is dark grey woodwork and picture rails 😭. 1930s house and they have managed to leave the original wooden doors though.

i want our bedroom to be first room I sort and I LOVE colour, happy to go bold and want to really personalise the room. However, we don’t want to replace the grey carpets as they are basically brand new and our bed also has grey upholstery so it needs to blend with this.

i’m a bit overwhelmed with choice on Pinterest so what would you do with it? Average shape but with an old fireplace on one wall and built in cupboards opposite where we will put the bed, currently wooden but open to painting!

i like pinks, jewel colours, navy, burgundy but also love creams, golds, neutral, kind of luxurious feel (though not convinced on how it goes with the carpet!!!). Do like prints and wallpaper but not sure how this works with a window on one wall, cupboards on one, fireplace on another!

picture of offending room attached from the listing.

Print in your soft furnishings is a lovely way to go

Maireas · 25/06/2022 13:54

Can't you get rid of the grey carpets? They're the dull sticking point.

I love grey (but not all grey). It goes with a deep blue, navy blue, lots of greens, Teale… loads of options.

The trouble is trying to brighten and warm up the grey, isn't it? I'd just rip out the carpet, but I can understand the OP's reluctance.

We have willow green by dulux in our bedroom with grey carpets, it’s lovely 😁

longtompot · 25/06/2022 15:18

Some nice ideas here, especially the blue and the green. I also like the yellow but it might be too bright for a bedroom www.bennettscarpets.com.au/general-news/7-gorgeous-colours-that-go-with-grey-for-a-beautiful-home/

You could have three walls a solid colour and the bed head wall the bold patterned wallpaper

Loving all the suggestions, keep them coming- I have 3 bedrooms all decorated the exact same (and stairs and hallway!) so other suggestions helpful for the other 2 rooms (1 to be spare room, another is probably dressing room!)

You need to read up about colour theory and colour wheel 🤷🏼‍♀️🤣

I really don’t thanks, I am well aware of what the colour wheel is, and what grey and brown are!
I still think grey( any grey) and orange look awful together. It’s my opinion.

We have dusty pink walls and a greyish/green carpet.

I’d keep the walls relatively plain, maybe a pale dusky pink then I’d go bolder with bedding like navy or sage green or any other contrasting but also complementary colour. All ties in with the grey carpet too.

altiara · 29/06/2022 10:09

Have you Looked at Lust wallpapers? Bold and colourful.

I just wanted to return to this thread and confirm that de-greying has been started!!!

we got the keys in November and have been cracking on- we are totally committed and have targetted the offending bedroom, spare room and lounge first. All woodwork in all 3 rooms had been painted eggshell white, ceilings and above picture rails white matt.

we’ve also decided to replace flooring as there’s no point sticking to something we hate. We’ve found gorgeous original floorboards upstairs and are paying someone to revamp them and varnish, should come up a lovely pine colour. Lounge carpet will be a cream, with a bold navy print wallpaper! Spare room is the darkest of the house so have gone for an almost white paper with a gold leaf print over- again wooden floors and white woodwork!

for the tragic bedroom, we ended up doing FAR more work than intended. We ended up ripping out the shoddy handmade wardrobe, giving us far more space and committing to replastering and restoring the floorboards. This gave us FAR more choice on the colour although our bedframe is a light grey 🙈. I stuck to my gut that I love jewel colours and burgundy and painted the ENTIRE room below the picture rail Florentine Red by Dulux Heritage. Absolutely obsessed, it’s a rich, luxurious colour that we love and isn’t any kind of trend.

we’ve added a white and silver blind in a heavy textured fabric, floor length curtains TBC, will hang a huge gold mirror on the fireplace opposite the window, on the lookout for a fancy looking light and some lovely artwork.

i can’t believe it’s the same room- the light in the room is incredible once we got rid of all the grey around the window!

I bought an ex private rental house 5 years ago. It was magnolia throughout which is my pet hate as I grew up in house that was fifty shades of neutral.

I redecorated throughout before I moved in.

Sitting/dining room - Red with a black and white feature wall

Kitchen - have left as is but soon to be American diner style, black/white/red/turquoise

My bedroom - purple

Dds bedroom - sage green, blush pink

Office - navy and gold

Bathroom - white/iridescent with chrome/diamanté accents which I'm planning to switch for bamboo and a faux living wall

Hallway/stairs/landing - pale grey but with lots of brightly coloured artwork.

superdupernova · 29/01/2023 10:38

@user1471548941 do you have an Instagram account? Your style sounds a lot like what I want for our next house.

silverclock222 · 29/01/2023 10:43

I would replace the carpets. I hate grey.

TheFeistyFeminist · 29/01/2023 10:44

There's a Facebook group for everything and I stumbled upon one called something like Moody Maximalism. You'll either love it or hate it but you'll know quickly and if you love that stuff, there's so much inspiration to be had.

PegasusReturns · 29/01/2023 10:45

If you can replace the grey carpets.

I know you said they’re new but they suck the joy out of a room. Everything you do
will look so much better with a decent carpet down

PegasusReturns · 29/01/2023 10:46

Oh I’m guilty of not reading your update - glad you changed things up!

DragonsFurry · 29/01/2023 13:02

I have grey walls in the bedroom (the only room I promise!), it looks lovely with pale blue woodwork.

DragonsFurry · 29/01/2023 13:04

And wood, lots of light wood, rattan etc

Chewbecca · 29/01/2023 13:12

Good job OP!
For updating the thread, for dumping the carpets and for such a gorgeous colour for your walls - looks fab!

StellaOlivetti · 29/01/2023 13:28

My view: if you decide you’re going for bold print wallpaper…. Forget a feature wall, do all four walls. I was very worried about doing this but it looks great!

EzzieM · 29/01/2023 13:35

Pale yellow walls with cushions in teal or pink would work well with grey carpet
