Best Dulux off-white for north facing house?

mazzamoo123 · 19/06/2022 19:24

Hi,

we are about to move into a rental and are allowed to choose one colour for throughout the house - bedrooms and all! The house is very dark - surrounded by woods and north facing. Can anyone recommend the best Dulux paint? We’re thinking of Swansdown (is it too cold?) or Nutmeg white (is it too pink?) at the minute but any suggestions appreciated. We don’t want any yellow undertones and so far have ruled out Timeless, Egyptian Cotton, Just Walnut and Summer Linen.

thanks!

I used Dulux Ivory Lace through most of my north facing house and really like it, however I chose it specifically because of the creamy yellow undertones so I guess that's ruled out for you.

I'm pleased to read that you've ruled out Egyptian Cotton. In a south facing room it's fine but in a dark/north facing room it looks really murky and "gloomy" (I used to work in a building painted in Egyptian Cotton from top to bottom...).

Friends have Nutmeg in their house and it's nice, although it does have a pinkish undertone.

The Dulux "light and space" range is good and it does what it says on the tin (i.e. makes a room feel brighter), I used it in one of our gloomiest rooms and I feel it makes a difference (I can't remember the shade I used but it has slightly yellow undertones again, so you wouldn't be interested in my choice specifically)!

I know you have said Dulux but we are trying to find the best off-white and have found that F&B Winborne white is the perfect one. Try a tester and get it mixed if you like it.

I'm pretty certain We have Jasmine white in our north facing dining room which we're happy with.

Thanks everyone. Long story but we have to use Dulux!

I bought a white with a hint of grey paint, and it actually looks a bit purple. Very frustrating.

Utini · 19/06/2022 22:03

I have Dulux White Cotton in a north facing bedroom. It's only slightly off white, with no hint of yellow.

Romney Wool?

Another vote for White Cotton, we have it in two north facing rooms and it looks lovely, sort of chalky white.

Lund · 19/06/2022 22:59

White cotton is just white, Jasmine white is a very subtle off-white.

It's very frustrating when this happens... I now make a point of going to a shop where they mix paint and asking them what they recommend based on the pigments required to make a certain colour. So, for example, I wanted a very light grey to compliment some blue panelling and the assistant recommended Dulux Quartz Flint (if memory serves me correctly!) because he knew it used black and blue pigment (therefore no chance of any green, pink, purple tints, etc).

We have Easel White in our kids bedrooms. It's a really warm white.

I really like Dulux white mist, have it in a few rooms.

MyphonedroppedintoColleensboot · 20/06/2022 05:08

How white does it have to be? You could try Timeless

MyphonedroppedintoColleensboot · 20/06/2022 05:09

Sorry just seen you’ve ruled it out

UncomfortableSilence · 20/06/2022 05:34

I've just had our hall, stairs and landing decorated and we have Nutmeg White at the top and White Cotton at the bottom.

White Cotton is really just a white and as a PP mentioned Nutmeg in certain lights does have a pinky undertone and is a definite colour rather than a white. I can post a picture if you'd like?

Blastandbollocks · 20/06/2022 05:47

Linen White. Just painted it in a north east hall with no natural light on the stairs.

Slightly pinky tones which make it look warmer. And I went to the trade counter and got the trade version with light reflecting properties which is essentially bomb proof for wiping up marks. But more expensive, but worth it.

User76745333 · 20/06/2022 06:04

Can I ask why you've ruled out timeless? It's a very easy colour to live with since its warm in both north and south facing rooms.

lurchermummy · 20/06/2022 06:43

Dulux Trade can be mixed to any shade if you have the paint chart or the RAL code for the colour you want

mazzamoo123 · 20/06/2022 06:44

Thanks! So I really like timeless but my husband is bored of it as our whole house was painted in it last time!!

what is the difference between White Mist, White Cotton and Swamsdown??

@UncomfortableSilence a pic would be great! Thank you :)

*swansdown!

The second pic is upstairs and it looks darker there.

It came out quite different to the tester we got and I wasn't sure but I really like it now, just struggling to match a carpet now Confused

I love nutmeg white but yes to the slight pinkiness. I think it goes well with modern beige/grey/greige and it'll clash with anything yellowy.

I haven't come across Swansdown, maybe it's a newer one and that's why you're not getting many replies on it. White cotton is basically white, just not quite so white that it makes the skirtings look yellow.

mazzamoo123 · 20/06/2022 17:48

Has anyone heard of delicate veil?!! it looks nice but can’t find any reviews.

At the minute we’ve boiled it down to white mist and swansdown. As the house is so dark I think we might go white mist as it’s paler but is it cold @thesilver ?

i need to look at linen white too!

I have white mist in a room with both north and south facing windows. It definitely isn't warm and has no yellow tone in my space. Next to pure brilliant white it looks a very pale grey.
