Sorry for the clickbait title 😁

I'm renovating a cabinet, I'm not sure what the handles are made from and the best way to clean them up. Any ideas oh wise women of mumsnet?

I'm not going to lie, I'm a little disappointed.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 19/06/2022 17:14

Bar keepers friend cleaner will probably sort them.

The first time I've ever clicked on a post on this board.
I must say, I'm a little disappointed Grin

Years ago there was a pre school children’s tv programme called “The Hoobs”. They were little furry alien news reporters, who had come to Earth to send news items back about humans and our activities.
Every show had some hilarious double entendres - I have no idea how they got past the censor - but I still remember the one about spring cleaning. It ended with the little female alien saying to camera “That was Hoob News, and this is Roma Hoob - polishing a knob!”

My family member used to work for a company that sold door furniture.

Called 'Knobs & Knockers.' I shit you not.

SpottyBumPony · 19/06/2022 18:44

I had bought some little knobs from tk max but then I have to fill the holes and drill other holes.

The original handles are quite unusual and attractive so it would be nice to keep them. This is the cabinet

I would try ketchup.

WeAreTheHeroes · 19/06/2022 22:36

Yes, they look like brass so ketchup will bring back the shine. Won't last forever though and they'll probably need regular Brasso'ing. If you don't like that look, just clean them with warm soapy water.

On that cabinet, I think I'd rather leave the original handles as they are than have filled in holes and little knobs.

Try the brass polish on the back side of one of the handles first to see if that does the trick.

Another disappointment 😂

I bought my kitchen door knobs there.

Peek metal cleaning paste. I find it much better than brasso. A cleaner at work recommended it and it's only about £4 for a tube on amazon.

Anotherselfemployedcleaner · 20/06/2022 20:59

@Babdoc Ha ha, I used to love watching The Hoobs, and remember that episode well! 😂

Here’s the clip on YouTube:
The Hoobs - double entendre

Duchessofmuchness · 20/06/2022 21:06

Sorry don't know how to clean them but I love the cabinet. 100% keep the original knobs.

Babdoc · 20/06/2022 21:47

@Anotherselfemployedcleaner , do you also remember the episode with “I can’t spend all day on my back with my legs in the air!” - I think Roma had got accidentally stuck to another Hoob, back to back, and when he stood up she was hoisted up and made the remark. My (at the time) very young DC never understood why the Hoobs always had me in hysterics…! Grin
