How to make a bed that’s photo worthy?

At the moment, we have two pillows each, a fitted sheet and a duvet (with a cover on).. but I want to make our bedroom feel more cosy and whenever I see pictures of beds made up on Instagram/Pinterest the room just looks like it feel more cosy!

what do I need to get the desired effect?!

Bet it takes them hours to get perfect pic and hundreds of cushions and the loads of different lights in different parts of the room out of sight of the camera.

depends on the size of the room and what furniture you have. Smaller room, darker colours will add to the overall cosy beds, so would soft fluffy bedcovers/pillows

beds in photos always seem to have far too many pillows which looks great in the picture but then you have to throw them on the floor to actually sleep. I've a friend who does a lot of Instagram stuff - her bed on Insta looks completely different to the bed she normally sleeps in.

putting a warm blanket over the foot of the bed gives a good contrast for a photo & is nice for sleeping too.

and think about what is beside the bed or in the rest of the room - good curtains? nice light? bedside rug?

RoseMartha · 30/05/2022 21:47

To be honest the most important thing is that is it sleep worthy.

These perfect pictures on SM are not a reflection of real life.

To look more cosy how about a throw and a bedside rug and soft lamps.

I discovered a trick for this when taking photos to sell our house. By accident (ok reduced in TKMaxx) I bought a lovely V&A over blanket two sizes too big for the bed.

It hangs halfway to the floor on all sides and covers the bed from bottom to the very top. Pillows are invisible and cushions go on top. Looks fancy!

1, Go out & spend loads of money on expensive co-ordinating bed linen & colourful cushions of various shapes & sizes.

2, Make up bed with linen & arrange cushions artfully & symmetrically.

3, Take perfectly lit & framed photos of impressive bed, upload to Insta & bask in glory of likes & comments.

4, Remove expensive bed linen & replace with everyday stuff because you don’t want to get it dirty / stained / damaged.

5, It’s bedtime! Remove carefully arranged cushions from bed & throw on floor. Sleep. Wake up. Make bed & carefully rearrange cushions. Repeat daily for the next few months.

6, Get bored of pointless cushion arranging palaver. Leave them on floor.

7, Get bored of tripping over cushions. Throw them in cupboard. Forget about them.

Guess where my own bed cushions currently reside? Grin

Hahaha ok I’m being a big ‘all for photos’ I admit.. the likelihood is that they are going to live in the ottoman at the end of the bed 😂 Hmm.. maybe just nice bedding and throw then..

I have one cushion which DD bought me. I wasn't into them but it is lovely and makes the bed look nicer. And a throw across the bottom. (There's also a blanket for the cat but I'm sure that's not needed Grin)

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 30/05/2022 22:59

Cushion is a furry one so very cosy

Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 30/05/2022 23:03

I like on below deck they way they iron the sheets on the bed, or use a squidgy thing and a spray. I'd like to reach a point in life where my bed sheets were freshly ironed/squidgied every day. I just think it makes even a plain cover look immaculate.

Basilbrushgotfat · 30/05/2022 23:05

2 pillows either side,
Prop them up on their sides so they're standing up (like in hotels),
Square continental pillows in different cases to your main pillows propped up between them and the headboard,
Fluff up duvet and pillows,
Bed linen should be crease free,
Plush throw or blanket across bottom of bed - natural fibres or good quality faux fur,
Luxurious rug at side of bed to sink toes into,
Clean and elegantly laid out bedside tables with lamp, water glass, vase of posies,
Borrow a good looking cat or dog to sit at foot of bed looking cute and clean.

Job done.

Nat6999 · 30/05/2022 23:13

Buy a duvet & cover at least one size bigger than the bed, then it hangs well down at both sides. Change the cover the morning the photos are being taken so it isn't creased & fold a throw over the bottom third of the bed.

Threetulips · 30/05/2022 23:13

A fried uses a throw - bit removes the quilt so it’s perfectly flat - then adds the cushions. Shouts at BF for using said cushions - makes bed before sleep.
Rinse and repeat.

LateAF · 31/05/2022 14:52

Like this- you can recreate any of these looks fairly cheaply with Ikea, H&M or M&S (try the Fired Earth range though it’s dearer) cushions and bedding/throws/bedspreads.

I find 3 or 4 pillow/cushion layers perfect for lounging in bed, but the cushions always always get chucked on the floor before bed and put back on in the morning.

kateandme · 01/06/2022 21:49

Photoshop is SM how to.ita not real.the coloursvthe shapes all staged for hours then enhanced.fake as fun.never trust a body or room or view it anything shot on sM.most phones are automatically filtered now that's before they use the applicayed Photoshop.
If say warm golden rampage and light is one key.

MuchTooTired · 12/06/2022 10:31

I have a velvet bedspread that I Chuck over the bed which covers the duvet and pillows completely. Takes a couple of minutes to get it without bubbles, then three square cushions in the middle - one pow flower one and two pink ones to tie it all together.

I'm rubbish at ironing and essentially lazy, so this is the fastest way I can stage my bed for photos/viewings (we’re about to go up for sale).

Samanabanana · 12/06/2022 10:37

The trick to a proper insta worthy bed shot is two duvets (additional cool points if your linen is complementary rather than matchy matchy), plus throws, cushions and extra pillows. Bonus points for artfully placed tray with breakfast items, and/or book. But who can be arsed with all that? Grin

fruitbrewhaha · 13/06/2022 16:34

You need a lovely dog having a nap in it.

fruitbrewhaha · 13/06/2022 16:34

*on it. Not in.

Trivester · 13/06/2022 16:38

Get ahead of the next trend and opt for the relaxed, unironed linen bedding look. Minimal effort required.

tootiredtobother · 13/06/2022 16:42

well having been in Marks and Sparks recently, I notice they make beds up with TWO duvets, one usually plain the other a pattern. It all looks so plump and 'sink in to able'. Fold over the top edge and do the stand up on edge trick with pillows

OakPine · 13/06/2022 19:09

If you want your bedroom to actually be more cosy then focus on good quality mattress, soft good quality cotton or linen sheets and good pillows/duvet.

If you want it to look cosy for Instagram, then style it with as much polyester fur tat as you can carry from Dunelm. Two duvets, even though if you tried to sleep under 2 it would be like sleeping in a toaster. Don't forget to arrange a throw diagonally across the bottom of the bed and balance a tray with coffee and croissants on the bedcover ;)

wotsitsaremyfave · 23/06/2022 19:41

Three pillows min. Standing up on their side

Then cushions. Square at back and rectangle wt front

Throw at the bottom
