What would you do with these fitted wardrobes?

This is my son's bedroom, which we need to do up.

These wardrobes/units were in the house when we moved in a little while ago.

I don't like them but if I take them out I'll have to replace the skirting boards, carpets and loose really good storage. I've already taken the cupboard doors off the shelving in the middle.

I'm rubbish at this sort of thing. How can I improve them? Would you paint them? Any creative design ideas anyone?

Would love some ideas, thank you!

Opening the shelving looks good.
Would you mind leaving the carcases wood if the doors and drawers were white?

Rustoleum kitchen paint gets good reviews and I think it's mimimal prep

They are a little dated but if you painted them navy and new handles it would look current

I’d paint them as PP says. Prime then first with a Zinsser product, the best in the biz. That shiny furniture needs a primer or the paint just peels off.

Thanks both, the suggestions are really helpful.

Like the paint colour ideas Bruce. And thanks for the practical help/link Lynne.

You can go through a company like Decorating Centre Online who will tint specialist products (like Zinsser) to a colour of your choice. So if you like a Dulux, Crown, F&B, Little Greene branded etc colour but they don’t do a suitable product, you can have a specialist product colour matched by DCO. I’ve used them, they are really good. Delivery is quick and the colour matches are pretty faithful, better than the dulux machine at my local Homebase, anyway.

i think painting the walls a different colour would help. I did 2 of my son’s walls in sapphire salute and it looks amazing.

Can you paint the main part of the shelf, desk top his favourite colour. The inside of the cubby holes another colour. Change the handles to something more fun.
then paint the walls the same colour as the shelf and desk top.
keep the colours light. Dark colours make the room dark and appear smaller
