Valspar white paints - tell me a secret

I am going a bit mad trying to choose an off white paint for our landing and hallway. It is quite dark and lots of shadows, with a soft grey carpet and Dulux brilliant white doors, skirting etc.

I've looked at warm whites like F&B wimborne white but they look too yellow and I don't think will go with the carpet. Ideally I want a pinkish tone but the samples I've tried come out TOO pink.

Currently looking at Valspar "tell me a secret" or "thousand shells". Just wondering if anyone has used either of these colours?

Sorry, I haven't used either of those colours - but we used Valspar paint in one of our bedrooms, and the smell was horrible. It took ages to disappear as well - I'd never use it again for that reason!

(Probably not helpful!)

Have you tried Dulux timeless? It isn’t pink toned but it’s my favourite off white.

Moppincraxy · 22/04/2022 13:44

I looked at Timeless but it looks quite yellow/creamy and I thought it might just look a bit old/faded against brilliant white woodwork.

I wonder if they've changed the smell as I painted a wall in another Valspar colour and it didn't smell at all. I used the Premium Matt so maybe different ones smell?

There was a problem years ago with valspar, but I’ve used it about three years ago and no issues, I think thr smell problem is long resolved.

Gloomandglow · 22/04/2022 13:49

Slaked lime by little greene is the perfect white. Not as stark as brilliant white and looks slightly pinkish next to white but not obviously so.

Moppincraxy · 22/04/2022 13:51

Thanks. I'm kind of committee to Valspar as I bought 10l of rose crystal as the sample looked white on the wall, to find that it's actually properly pink! So going to use their colour promise and swap it for a different Valspar colour.

I have timeless against bright white and honestly it’s very subtle. Try a tester and see what you think.

i have also seen slaked line is popular too.

Not the answer, but if anyone is painting a ceiling white, supermatt is great. Not too "brilliant " but definitely plain white. Looks far nicer than PBW. More "F and B" all white

It really isn't. I used i and whenever the house heats up in summer it smells like a Tom cat has pissed all over. I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole, they said it had been sorted long before I bought any.

Remind me of what's coming actually. Drives me demented looking for the smell until I remember.

LaWench · 23/04/2022 17:30

I love timeless, it was a very soft warm greyish white. Valspar colour matched it for us

Notanotherwindow · 23/04/2022 17:34

White Hot is a good one. I used to work on the Valspar desk and it was popular because ut doesn't really have any other colours in it.

Glittertwins · 23/04/2022 18:35

The only problem we had with Valspar was that it took an age to dry even on one of the hottest days in the year. Never had a bad smell in the room though, it is the coolest room in the house but it has still got quite warm in there.

PansyPetunia · 23/04/2022 19:03

coconut juice (i think thats what it was called) always was the most requested

by the way, the poster with the smell issue....that was fixed by valspar a good while back...they removed an ingredient and it ended up smelling like cat urine...so they added it back in and all is fine now

BabyClam · 23/04/2022 19:45

We used Valapar Cambric Lace which is a nice neutral, slightly cool toned, off white.

Furball · 23/04/2022 22:37

I've got Dulux Bleach Lichen 4 - if you didn't know you might think it was white, but if you look at it against white it has a really nice greyish/pinky shade to it - you could get Valspar to colour mix match it?

HiCandles · 23/04/2022 22:42

I've used a lot of Valspar over last 2 years and it has no smell at all even when the house heats up. I have Wimborne White colour matched by Valspar and it is lovely, I wouldn't say it is yellow toned at all when it's up. Just a warm off white.

WeAreTheHeroes · 26/04/2022 06:04

Timeless has a slight brown tone to it - works well in a very sunny room where we have it. We've just had ceilings in a dark hall, stairs and landing done with a colour match to Dulux White Cotton. Is a slightly grey off white. I matched it to the white on the wallpaper we're having. It's not cold looking on.

SewingBees · 26/04/2022 06:23

I've used Tell Me A Secret in our lounge and our daughter's bedroom and I like it, though I wouldn't describe it as warm, just a very very slight hint of pink.

JorisBonson · 26/04/2022 06:31

We used a few different "white" Valspar paints that all turned green or blue. Dulux white mist is much better.

cafedesreves · 26/04/2022 06:34

Our friends recommended Flint by Little Greene

MissyBB · 26/04/2022 06:36

Farrow and Ball Strong White, it has magenta mixed in so not a cold pale grey. It's a warm but very neutral light grey.
I bought Valspar and repainted in F&B.

knowinglesseveryday · 27/04/2022 22:57

Dulux Piano white is nearest to Wimborne White.

Meh2020 · 27/04/2022 23:02

I’ve done a lot of painting recently and can confirm there is no smell!

I can’t comment on the paint colour you have mentioned but I did use Freshwater Pearl by Valspar a few years back and that was a lovely white - not cream at all

I've painted most of my house with valspar recently and a year or so ago and there's absolutely no horrible smells at all

BIWI · 28/04/2022 11:21

Glad to hear that they've got rid of the smell. As we're about to paint our bedroom, the thought of trying to sleep with that was truly off-putting.
