Yes, caulk. You need a tube and a caulk gun. After you apply it, wet a finger and run it along the bead of caulk to flatten it out. Can be painted over.

Practice first: I’m brilliant at caulk but DP is a fucking maniac and manages to get it everywhere like a toddler.

Haha thank so you for the tip!

Everyone needs caulk! Yes, for the job you've described, but also on the joins between picture rail and walls, window and door architraves and walls, ceilings and walls...it makes such a difference to the finish on the paintwork.

We are doing a lot of DIY in a house that doesn't have any square corners. Caulking is my favourite pastime these days!

@AnnieJ1985 it’s so good isn’t it? We’re in a rickety Victorian terrace and everything looks shoddy even when new and newly painted, but then caaaaaauuuuuuulllllk. Decorating magic. I just did my hall/stairs/landing and used two tubes in a day.

Also useful to prevent mice in conjunction with steel wool – which they’ll just push out of the way. Caulk it!

@stuntbubbles

I feel super smug, like I am a slick, DIY pro while I use it. I wander around the house brandishing the gun, searching for gaps to fill (of which there are many 😬)

@AnnieJ1985 Haha, yes! Exactly this! It’s almost disappointing when a room is done and caulked to the hilt, whither shall my talents go then?!
