Choosing a bed

Sorry for the boring subject, but getting this wrong could be an expensive mistake for me.

Do upholstered headboards stay looking nice, or are they difficult to keep clean?

Do foot boards make changing the sheets a pain?

Are there any companies you’d recommend or vice versa? I know the quality doesn’t always match the price. My budget is up to about £800, but I’d prefer to pay a lot less if that wouldn’t be false economy.

I’ll be following this with interest as I’m also looking for a bed and have a similar budget.

I have ruled out an upholstered bed as I imagine the headboard will get stained.

I need to store things under the bed too but don’t want it to look messy.

You can get split corner valance sheets that allow you to use a valance with a footboard but I’m not convinced they will look very neat . I’ve never tried one.

My current bed has a footboard and I find changing normal (non-valance) fitted sheets is fine.

We got a very cheap bed frame (silver metal, MFI... £120. I still like it 15 years on), and we invest in a good mattress every 12 years. We’ve had our Loaf ‘perfect mattress’ for 3 years and absolutely love it. Had a silent night memory foam before that and hated it.

The loaf one was around £600 and worth every penny! I was nervous buying online but they offered a 100 day no quibble return, money back guarantee!

No advice on upholstered headboards yet as only had our bed a month, and it doesn't have a footboard so can't help there either! But wanted to recommend Aspire store- our bed was about £600 for a king size: https://aspirestore.co.uk/product/sinatra-fabric-ottoman-bed/#/35-colour-eirelinenngrey/94-bedsize-3fttsingle

we have upholstered headboards, and after a few years if they look grotty, I just get a new piece of fabric & fix it over the old (staple-gun around the back) for a new look. That doesn't work if you have buttons / pleats but is fine for a plain headboard & not too expensive.

Thoroughly recommend the Happy Bed Company. I've had this one for 2 years in a king-size. No footboard because previous partner was a lanky streak, his feet used to hang over the end, and he hated a footboard as he had to curl his legs up. Traded him in, kept the bed. Vacuum the headboard weekly as it does gather dust on top. Excellent storage underneath.

Hi, we've just purchased a super king size oataman bed, our previous one was superking but with Black leather look alike headboard with buttons lasted 9 years started to peel off, but what i liked about the bed the fact i yousto get a leather wipe every few days quick wipe down.
This bed is a microfiber type material which i choose can be easily cleaned with a baby wipe once a week or so....
Cost £1100 because the mattress is bit expensive it's a 2000 pocket silk something... only the bed has arrived not the mattress, so i can't remember. I wanted a big headboard this time... so i went for this
You can easily keep both materials clean.

Thank you for the suggestions so far - very helpful. I’d never heard of some of the companies suggested. I didn’t know you could get special sheets to fit around foot boards, either.
