Parana pine ceiling; to paint or not?

We live in a 1970s house. It has lovely high ceilings, floor to ceiling windows and big rooms. The sitting room has 70s features with an exposed brick internal wall and parana pine ceiling. I have held out for years against painting the ceiling as I feel it’s a period feature. I’ve just repainted the room and I really love the colour www.dulux.ie/en/colour-details/pure-jute-1996222 but wonder about it against the ceiling. We use the room at night mostly as we have a living area off the kitchen so I have been thinking it was a lovely cosy night time room but a number of friends have recommended painting it and I’m wavering. I’d love opinions

I recently painted a pine ceiling white but it didn’t look as good quality as yours. I love it painted, opens up my room but I do like your dark with the walls. If it’s a cosy vibe I wouldn’t pint. If you want it fresh and airy then go for it. Don’t be persuaded by other! Go for what you want

@Blush21 I’m definitely going for a cosy vibe at the moment. I wondered about going really bright and painting the walls and ceiling white but opted for the very rich green instead which I love. There’s a big rug as shown which covers most of the floor

Def paint it.

@Easterbunnyiswindowshopping You think it’s too dark I guess? I feel if I paint it there’s no going back and I may lose one if the features of the house… I do think the white might significantly lift the room though. 🤯

Oh I’d keep it dark! Looks very cosy and rich

Imissmoominmama · 05/02/2022 20:17

It’s great- really goes with your warm furnishings… and tbh, I wasn’t expecting to like it!!

gemandjule · 05/02/2022 20:30

😀 a few votes of confidence in it. This shows the brick wall, ceiling and rug all together. The colours are definitely strong and I dithered for ages, the walls were cream for years and I love the change, it’s so much warmer. Just dithering about the ceiling now

I love the ceiling xx

dalrympy · 05/02/2022 21:10

I love it!

Namaste6 · 05/02/2022 21:39

I would keep it dark, lighten the fireplace bricks and put down a light rug.

Taurus221 · 05/02/2022 21:54

I really like it how it is. A few standing lamps would help lift the room if you wanted to lighten it up, and/or art work, but it's a lovely feature!

gemandjule · 05/02/2022 22:13

@Namaste6 no idea how you would lighten the bricks other than plaster them and paint them and not planning on that. Also I love the rug and only bought it a few years ago so that’s staying. I have new carpet coming next week which is a bit lighter but obviously there’s not much of that on view

@Taurus221lamps are a good idea. I have art to go back up since the painting so that will help too

Please leave your ceiling!
It's lovely, it's genuine. I am biased though - I have a 70s house with a Parana pine open tread staircase. Neighbours have painted theirs, but I call it our period feature Grin.

muckandnettles · 14/02/2022 10:02

I'd keep it. We also have a 70s house and I like most 70s features and plan to keep them. I'm envious of @Jubilee67's open tread staircase!

LemonViolet · 18/02/2022 21:42

Just found your thread OP and also love the ceiling as is! I agree with you the ceiling and the brick wall are original features that in another few decades will be period features and much sought after. I think they’re perfect for a cosy, evening vibe and love your paint choice, I don’t think anything needs lightening up. Definitely keep it! Look after it Smile

I might be tempted to play up the 70s vibe a bit more with the styling - add some orange cushions, pick up the dark green of the walls elsewhere - but I think it’s a lovely cosy homey room.

mrshoho · 20/02/2022 22:51

I would keep as it is. You've got the cosy warm feel and I love it.

gemandjule · 01/03/2022 23:21

Thanks everyone for the votes of confidence. The new carpet is down and some art work is up and I’m happy with my choice now

Leave it as it is. It's a period feature and at least it isn't orange
