I've got new fitted wardrobes coming tomorrow there in a cashmere deisgn and for weeks I've been trying to figure out a colour. I' think weve finally decided to for for 2 wall of magnolia and a spotty magnolia glittery wallpaper from b+q and change all our bedding g and curtains to chocolate brown

I have a vision in my head and I think it'll work best but my whole family hate magnolia and say its too boring whats your thoughts on that colour please

For me it sounds boring, but I can't think of anything worse than a neutral coloured home.

whenwillthedecoratingend · 09/01/2022 22:13

I much prefer magnolia to the current white and grey trend... I bloody hate the grey trend! Magnolia does have a slight yellow tone to go with cashmere but it will look fine. We had magnolia walls and a cashmere sofa for a long time and it was fine.

DappledThings · 09/01/2022 22:13

Cant imagine actually choosing magnolia, or anything in the white/cream/greige range. But I like blues and greens mostly. If you like a neutral then why not magnolia, it certainly fulfills the neutral brief.

On a side note it only occurred to me a few years ago, at RHS Wisley when we were there to see the display of all the magnolias in all their glory how weird it is that the most famously neutral paint colour is named after a tree with a famously vivid range of flower colours.

Magnolia is too yellow to put with brown. Try blue, or even a taupe or a light shade of brown that compliments your wallpaper.

Internetio · 09/01/2022 22:19

Try Johnson’s Ivory whisper- less ‘magnolia’ but still a neutral without the starkness of white and would look lovely against the cashmere wardrobe. Magnolia screams budget new build/Reno finish ime, every council tender for renovations states magnolia walls and white paintwork for commercial and residential. The builders did my renovated vicarage in cheap flat magnolia… took 3 years but I’ve finally got rid of it all- it looked grubby and seemed to get yellower by the day!

Snoken · 09/01/2022 22:20

Hate magnolia. It looks dirty, like someone has been smoking inside for 20 years. It's also too yellow to go with brown, it will look soulless and dull. Like a serviced apartment from the 90's. Especially with the glitter and mirrored doors too.

Iveputmyselfonthenaughtystep · 09/01/2022 22:23

Brown? Really?

When did the 90s come back?

Magnolia might be ok if you like it, but maybe try a more inspiring accent colour? A soft blue or rich green might be nice...

Undertheoldlindentree · 09/01/2022 22:24

My decorator told me that most paint colours can be traced back to these. Gives you a good idea of where Magnolia sits in the system.

Warm colours like beige and brown are coming back in design. People are moving away from white and grey. The pandemic and being in our homes more made people want cozier spaces.

Snap. I have this wallpaper in my bedroom and conservatory. It's lovely but be warned you can barely see the sparkle on it unless you have a bright white light in the room. I'll put a pic on and you'll see what I mean. I can only see it properly if I shine my phone light against it. I have seen what it looks like in a properly lit room though, when my decorator turned his decorators lamp on and it looks really nice. My living rooms the polar opposite. A glittery dark pink with a grey wallpaper with pink cherry blossom on it. The paint matches to the wallpaper. I can't find a photo of that though.

I like magnolia. Its simple and lots of stuff goes with it.

My hall is magnolia and needs repainting will probably just do another coat of magnolia.

Breadstick25 · 09/01/2022 22:29

Sorry, no to magnolia for me too. I think it will look even more yellow alongside brown. If it’s a really sunny room perhaps you could go for a deeper shade? Lots of other colours would go with your neutral wardrobes. What colour are your carpets?

Breadstick25 · 09/01/2022 22:32

Or if you wanted to keep it neutral there are about 20 different shades of white at B&Q. I have one in my hallway that’s very slightly blue.

Ooooo where is it in your bedroom as in how many walls and what have you paired it with? we have 2huge windows in our room and it's going to go where the purple wall currently is. Hoping the natural light will make it shine

Magnolia is too yellow for brown curtains. I know - I lived that combo in a rental.

I can’t remember which of dusted moss or bleached lichen (Dulux) I used but I’m not sure what also goes with the cashmere.

Can you colour match the cashmere colour or go a lighter version of whatever it matches too?

DappledThings · 09/01/2022 22:38

I'd keep the purple, it's a much better colour than any magnolia or other neutral.

saraclara · 09/01/2022 22:39

Magnolia is too yellow for me. For a neutral colour I replaced it with Jasmine white. It's a 'cleaner' and brighter alternative.

lambran · 09/01/2022 22:39

Carpets are a browny colour also .

I really dont want grey my downstairs is magnolia and grey my kitchen is white snd grey my bathroom is white with anthracite extracts

OP, you and I clearly have very, very different tastes - but even taste aside, magnolia is a big fat no. So are 'feature walls'. I recommend the Farrow and Ball colour chart, and either paint or wallpaper the walls. Not both. Your natural light sounds enviable!

kittenkipper · 09/01/2022 22:40

I love colour, but appreciate magnolia. Personally the current trend of grey and white, where houses look exactly as they would in black and white movies, I find dull dull dull , and what's more I find it shocking that magnolia- hues of pink and yellow in a cream- is deemed cold?! It's as though people have forgotten what warm and cold light mean? Warm is yellow pink hues, cold blue grey- both are lovely in their own right, but magnolia is warm hued. It is a colour that may leave you "cold" but it is not a cold colour!

MaryStuart · 09/01/2022 22:44

For me, it’d be a no to magnolia walls (I lived with them once and they were just bleugghh) and a no to brown duvet covers

Jjjayfee · 09/01/2022 22:44

There are two magnolias..one yellow based, one pink ..unless they have changed that as years since we bought magnolia

sunshinesupermum · 09/01/2022 22:45

Absolute no from me. Go with a warm white. Meanwhile brown bedding doesn't sound to restful a bedding colour either but I don't have to sleep in it thankfully!

JugglingJanuary · 09/01/2022 22:47

I hate magnolia with a passion. I dislike brown & I wouldn't get 'cashmere' wardrobes...so what I think doesn't really matter does it.

If I were in your position, I'd get some colour cards and hold them up to your wardrobe doors when they arrive, choose a few & get sample pots & wall lining paper. Paint up some large samples then decide.

Depending on the tone if cashmere it is chalk white/pink/sage are worth looking at.

HopingForMyRainbowBaby · 09/01/2022 23:38

@lambran 3 full walls in the bedroom which has French doors to the right hand side of the bed leading into the Conservatory. The conservatory will be 2 walls with the same paper and then a full width patio door. I'm not sure what it's like with full sun on it as I only moved in at the end of November. Carpet I have a grey carpet in the bedroom and at the moment until I get the rest of my laminate flooring down which is also grey I have a dark red carpet in the conservatory
