I had this for Xmas and it's not myself style, how can I make it more Moroccan-esque?

What about it is not your style? What is it made of?

trigo · 29/12/2021 18:07

I think it's some sort of plywood, it doesn't suit my style because it's black and modern looking, the rest of my furniture is either natural wood or neutral colours and is antique/classical look, just not sure how to make it fit in? Decals? Gold leaf? Help! Obviously am grateful for the gift and it was thoughtful, I've always wanted a dressing table, just wish it fitted in my room

It's not my style either. but it looks useful.
Could you hide i behind a screen or drape a piece of moroccan looking fabric over it?

Decoupage or furniture paint might be an option

BewareTheRedNosedDragon · 29/12/2021 21:23

Could you by either return it or sell it and get something you like more? I can't really see how the very aggressive modern minimalism of this could be softened tbh.

trigo · 29/12/2021 21:32

Yeah great ideas I'll try and drape fabric around the mirror and over the desk, wait few months and then decoupage over an "accident" caused by the "kids", I don't think it's real wood so not sure how well it will take the glue and paper, maybe add show knobs on the drawers?

I'd really hurt the gift-givers feelings if did that 🥴 but I know it's never going to suit the decor

Buy some metallic spray and make it gold...

trigo · 29/12/2021 21:45

@Santahatesbraisedcabbage that had crossed my mind!

Wickes do some amazing paints!!

KirstenBlest · 30/12/2021 08:27

It's a bit of an odd present - a piece of furniture not in keeping with your taste.

pickingdaisies · 05/01/2022 14:56

Paint it that deep Moroccan blue or other jewel colour. Cover the stool seat with suitable fabric. Add antique look brass handles or ceramic knobs to the drawers (the patterned ones you can find in tk maxx) - if you are confident to do that. Spray paint is probably the simplest way - but it is what it is!

pickingdaisies · 05/01/2022 14:59

Also I'm not sure how "handy" you are at DIY, but decals, gold leaf etc could end up making it look worse.

steppemum · 05/01/2022 15:03

it is really easy to paint and to decoupage.

It is harder to do it to make it look really good.

Will they see it painted? Are they going to be upset if you paint it? becuase you would need to do quite a lot ot get a new unified feel?

some suggestions:
Paint the whole thing in a base colour, not too dramatic, maybe a darker blue.
Find a peice of fabric that can cover the stool. Use this as the basis for the colours on the rest of it. Obviously choose something that goes with the colours in the room.
Then using the colours in that fabric, pick out someparts, one drawer, roudn the mirror, the inside of the shelf where the books are.
This breaks up the block colour, softens the sharp geometric and gives it some character.
I woudl then also find some drawer handles eg moroccan glass, and put those on the drawers.
And break up the mirror by stenciling a gold pattern on the corners

Oh I see pickingdaisies and I had similar ideas!

seekinglondonlife · 05/01/2022 17:09

Unless you are really good at DIY get someone professional to do it. Buying spray paint is easy but it's really not easy to get even coverage over large areas, especially if they are textured. I might have ruined several items of furniture, in my head I'm excellent at DIY but the reality is something else!

Great minds steppemum Grin
