How can I make up my bed like a hotel?

I would love to mAke my bed up like a hotel but I honestly don’t know how. I’ve looked online but can’t tell what I actually need. At the moment we have a king size divan and use a fitted sheet, duvet and pillows. Do I just need a flat sheet to put on under the duvet to get that luxurious feel?

Yes and maybe a bed spread too.

Really crisp, stiff cotton sheets & pillowcases.
No softener and ironed on high.

I’m eagerly watching this thread now as I want to know too. I buy expensive duvets and sheets and it still doesn’t look like how other people manage to do it!

Cherryblossoms85 · 26/12/2021 17:39

Well apart from the fact life is too short for that: hot iron, high thread count, flat sheets, mattress toppers and hospital corners...

NotVictorianHonestly · 26/12/2021 17:39

Ideally your sheets should all be white and high thread count. You also need two big square white pillowcases as well as your normal pillows, plus two smaller coloured cushions that go with your colour scheme. You then put normal pillows first, then square pillows then coloured cushions.

I have a cleaner who used to work in a hotel and she always tucks the duvet in under the mattress then puts a folded comforter over the bottom third. Pillows are leaned up against the headboard, not flat on the mattress. I was amazed at the difference this made! I don't have a bed sheet, although that folded out over the top of the duvet would finish it off properly!

HideRanger · 26/12/2021 17:49

Old fashioned starch on the bedlinen and lots of ironing, and two people making the bed so the hospital corners are taut.

babouchette · 26/12/2021 17:51

Getting your bedding washed and ironed professionally makes a big difference. It's not cheap though, about £25 a pop at my local place.

I have 4 pillows leaned against headboard, duvet is folded down and then a comforter o er the end. Bed linen is white company ...so white 😆

kerosene20 · 26/12/2021 23:23

Is a comforter a bedspread?? Thanks for replies so far.

So I make my bed like this but not 100% like this. I have just 4 pillows leaned up against headboard. Yes I gold down the duvet as in the picture.

A comforter/ bedspread or large blanket on the end. I only have one not two like the pic does.

John Lewis has a good range, mixture of comforter which tend to be thicker, throws and bedspreads

Just make sure what you get is right size so for king size bed get king size obv or as close to same size.

Why flat sheets? Wouldnt fitted sheets have the same effect?
BlackAlys · 29/12/2021 08:45

The duvet looks enormous on that pic. I have a king size for a king size bed - do people generally size up a duvet to get that draped look?

sweetbellyhigh · 29/12/2021 08:53

You can buy box corner duvets, the ones hotels use.

I adore bedding. I have a thick, padded mattress protector, and I prefer high quality cotton sheets. Some people prefer sateen or whatever but I love crispy Egyptian cotton.

Use a fitted sheet and ensure the seams match up, top with a flat sheet, then your box-corner quilted blanket then your cover/quilt.

I do. Dh and I would constantly fight over the duvet otherwise and it looks better.
MrsTophamHat · 29/12/2021 08:59

@BlackAlys your fitted sheet still goes on the bottom but you also have a fitted sheet on top of that. It's hospital cornered at the bottom, folded over just below pillow level then tightly tucked under the mattress.

I worked as a hotel chambermaid as a teenager.

NotVictorianHonestly · 29/12/2021 08:59

Yes I always have a duvet that is one size bigger than the bed

squashyhat · 29/12/2021 09:03

Multiple pointless cushions which end up on the floor, towels made to look like swans and a grubby strip of cloth across the end that everyone's shoes have been wiped on.

nowtygaffer · 29/12/2021 09:05

When you put the pillows on the bed hold them by their to top corners and kind of stand upright.

BlackAlys · 29/12/2021 09:58

Who knew! There's a whole art form to this! I'm moving soon so I may invest....

nowtygaffer · 29/12/2021 10:18

Try the pillows now! You'll be amazed Xmas Grin

Exhausteddog · 29/12/2021 10:29

It looks nice but what do you do with all the pillows, cushions, extra bedding when sleeping? We have a pillow each and a small cushion, but I often end up chucking the cushion on the floor. When I (very infrequently) stay at a hotel half the bedding seems to end up on the floor!
