Best sofa with pets.

I'm looking to change my sofas in the new year. I've always had hand me down furniture so this is the first time I get to properly choose. My children are teens/grown ups so no messy handprints but I do have dogs the family allow on the sofa. Current ones have covers and throws because they are so old and tatty but would be nice if I didn't need to do that with new ones.

Obviously trying to keep the pets off the sofa is one solution but I can't trust that will happen especially when I'm at work. So, I was looking for recommendations about fabrics that are easy to clean and hoover. Is leather better or worse? For example. Any fabrics that you've found that hold onto dog fur?

I've had leather with dogs before and it's got damaged by dog nails (and my dog nails are short). We have just bought a new sofa due to be delivered in Feb. We've gone for fabric, but I think we'll put throws on. Our two like to 'nest'

This has stood up to a bit of doggy mud - the fabric looks fairly natural at nearly 80% cotton -the covers are washable - haven't needed to in nearly a year, it's a good price and it's comfortable.
