What colour walls? Can't see past existing colour scheme

We recently moved house and I really want to redecorate but struggling to think of a suitable colour for the walls. Can anyone help me out with some ideas of what you'd do with this room:

• We have a medium sized living room but it's sort of open plan- with the stairs going up from the side of the room. So any paint colour in the living room would probably have to go up the stairs too.
• I have some curtains I love and want to keep in the room. They are a navy background with green/gold/brown patterns (looks better than it sounds)
• Sofa is grey (from previous house, where I followed the grey trend) and I can't afford to replace that right now, so walls will need to go with that
• The carpet will be changed too, so doesn't need to go with carpet colour
• New build style house

The previous owners had painted the room in several shades of grey (with a lighter shade up the stairs) and I' really struggling to see past that. But I can see that grey is starting to look a pretty dated now. I'd like it to look cosy and welcoming- but can see that anything too dark would make it look small (and would make the upstairs landing dark if we had the same colour there).

There is a lovely colour by Dulux called Dusted Dondant it's a warm mauve. It could be too dark for your space so a shade lighter perhaps. Would go nicely with the curtains I think x

I’m getting a teal and white vibe as I envisage your furniture and curtains as looking quite modern?

I would have gone lilac too - goes amazingly with navy and grey. Perhaps deep purple cushions/rug?
