High gloss kitchen units am I a nutcase?!

My DH and I are building our retirement home, we are hoping to make a modern open plan living space and have found some completely gorgeous coffee grey super high gloss units we’ve fallen in love with for the kitchen. I’ve had a light coloured painted kitchen for years and haven’t found it that easy to care for, I know I could go for a wood effect and that would be super forgiving. I want to be having family over frequently, having everyone together our boys and families including a dog. I’ve been so very sensible for all my life and there’s a part of me that just wants to have my dream home for once before I snuff it but am I completely mad to have a high gloss kitchen?

I have had high gloss white kitchen units for 12 years. I wipe them down once a week and they still look just as good as when they were new.

I have high gloss kitchen units. Yes if I wipe them down & buff them over every week they look good but I really, really wish I didn't have to....

Not a nut case at all! Super easy to keep clean and they reflect the light too making kitchen bright without feeling cold

I've got them too. They are a godsend in my house as my three year old grandson lives here. I can clean them with window spray and they look like new.
When we moved in here in 2011 the kitchen was fairly new so they have really passed the test of time.

Got cream ones more than 10 years ago. With a lip rather than handles.

They still look fab and somehow look clean even when they aren't particularly!

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 28/11/2021 00:42

I'd love them. Go for it.

I love my cream high gloss kitchen but they do show every single fingerprint.

I used to have white high gloss units that miraculously hid dirt.

I noticed a thread on here other day about Matt finish navy units. And apparently so so hard to keep clean.

We are going for gloss with our new kitchen. I’m assuming glass /mirror spray will work well!

BeyondOurReef · 29/11/2021 14:36

I think dark colours on kitchen units show the dirt more.

And darker gloss units never look clean. Unless you’ve literally just polished them.

The same can be said if the black granite worktops in this house. Always look filthy.

Mine are high gloss although in a colour I wouldn't have chosen. I clean them with white vinegar and they come up great.

LagerthaofKattegat · 29/11/2021 16:41

@Grandville what colour are yours?

Grandville · 29/11/2021 17:29

Black!

I actually think they mark more than light ones would. Just like the awful black carpet I ripped out. The kitchen is too new and functional to change though so I live with it.

I have cashmere j pull cupboard and drawers. Easy to look after. Quick wipe with a damp microfibre cloth and job done. I sometimes squirt the cloth with a weak mix of flash or white vinegar or sometimes with multiple surface polish. It all works well. Actually my kitchen is very easy to care for.

microbius · 29/11/2021 19:23

I have white gloss kitchen and it's so beautiful; gloss reflects light well and adds depth. It is such an interesting surface

LagerthaofKattegat · 29/11/2021 19:42

Thanks @Grandville we are considering either dark grey or ‘stone’ colour. Or maybe a mix of the 2. Maybe a bank of dark then the rest lighter.

Isseywith3witchycats · 04/12/2021 16:03

Another fan of high gloss units mine are pale blue and i just use glass spray and a microfibre cloth on mine and they look as good a year and a half later as the day they were fitted lighter colours seem to not show marks as much as the darker colours
