New mattress, new bed or both?

We bought a king size marks and spencer divan and mattress for our spare room which is really comfortable, so we bought the same for our bedroom, but the double version as we don't have space for a king size. Straight away, it was much less firm and not as comfy as the king size one. Over time, despite regularly turning the mattress it's become saggy, lumpy and dips in the middle. It's very bouncy. I hate it. This week I've got really bad back pain which I think is partly down to our bed.

We really need an upgrade. I can't decide whether we need to replace just the mattress or both the bed and mattress...I don't know how to tell.

We don't have room for a king size Sad

I have no idea what to go for, there's so much choice and we don't have a huge budget. We could probably stretch to £2k if we had to, but would rather spend less than half of that.

Help please!

For the sake of £200 I would try an IKEA Hovag on your existing divan base. We love ours, it was on a divan and is now on a wooden slatted bedframe.

I agree. You can get a very comfy, good quality bed frame plus mattress from IKEA for a lot less that £2k. All our beds are from IKEA.

I'm not convinced by IKEA for something like this..... had n IKEA he'd once which didn't last well.

I have a wood and metal bed frame which has lasted really really well, it must be 16 years old now and no issues at all
I've changed the mattress in that time and have a silent night one on it which they don't sell now but it's memory foam and springs
Neither were expensive and I've had spinal surgery so need a decent bed!
Absolute rubbish photo of the bed to show what I mean Grin

Can you not just move into the spare room with the king size bed?

1vandal2 · 16/10/2021 02:21

I agree with the move into spare room bed

IKEA mattresses do really well on Which etc. I find them comfier than the £1500 bed/mattress I had.

Aquamarine1029 · 16/10/2021 04:12

The solution is to move into the spare room, surely?

NoSquirrels · 16/10/2021 04:19

Replace the divan if you’re going to buy new. Do t just replace the mattress. Most bed shops won’t guarantee the mattress with the usual longish returns period if you put it on an old divan.

Go to a proper bed shop and spend time lying down! Most places have a 90-day returns window so you can properly test it.

We could sleep in the spare room, but I'm using it as my home office. It's a much smaller room with basically just a bed and my desk and work stuff. It's also a much colder room and noisier.

All our clothes, furniture and other stuff is in our bedroom. In the long run we need a bed in both beds which is comfortable, so even if we swap beds we'd need something that isn't lumpy and saggy in our room.
