Painting made cigarette smell?

Have recently moved and the house smelled fine and the walls looked fine. Wanted to have a brighter colour on the walls though. So, thought I'd just sugar soap and quick paint (without stripping everything). Since painting all I can smell is cigarette smoke coming from the freshly painted wall? Has anyone ever had this? The paint is brand new so not off. I don't know if maybe the people here before smoked and the paint activated it or something? I never once smelled smoke when viewing or after we'd moved in, only after painting. Have had the window open as much as possible but it's been about a week and I can still smell cigarette smoke so strong. Will I have to strip the walls right back to plaster or get a special primer paint and repaint?

what did you paint over?

and what was the new paint?

It seemed a wall that had lining paper and paint on top, just a matt dark beige paint. Didn't look bad or stained. Painted over with dulux white x 2 and then dulux matt mint macaroon x 2.

I painted a room (study, so didn't have to use every day) and after it dried, the smell was awful- not cigarettes but just awful. I lit diffusers, candles, tried air fresheners/room sprays, opened all windows but it hung around for weeks. It went eventually and is fine now
