Inspiration for west facing spare room

We're about to decorate our spare room, it's west facing, has a large window but also has a large tree outside so is fairly dark even in the afternoons.

It's currently cream and looks dreary. We often have different sets of friends staying and would like it to be more modern, was thinking a fresh white and getting a grey button back type bed frame with maybe pink curtains and bedding but this seems a bit bland. Any ideas for fresh but stylish themes?

I have a west facing bedroom (but no trees outside) and it's painted in silk seal from Colourtrend and I think it's a gorgeous colour. It's a greeny bluey grey colour that looks different depending on the light. My friend has it in her north facing kitchen and it has transformed her room.

Personally I like spare rooms to feel warm and cosy, because when guests stay, they generally spend most of their time in the rest of the house, and just go to their room to sleep. Unless they’re a bit antisocial like my dfather!

So I wouldn’t worry too much about trying to make a room bright that’s naturally a bit dark. I recently decorated my west facing guest room, and chose Zoffany Antiquarian for the walls (colour matched! Zoffany is £££) and so far my guests have loved how cosy it feels in there.

Thanks for the replies. Excellent point about the spare room being cosy, I don't think anyone has spent much time in there apart from at night! Got my eye on a dark grey ottoman bed for bonus storage, just need to decide on curtains and paint colours.

I saw a west facing bedroom painted in F&B India Yellow and it was glorious. Really warm and inviting.

Our west facing guest room is a pale but crisp green. The one we used is discontinued but the most similar would be Dulux Nordic spa or Dulux Well-being. The bedding is white with a green, taupe and pink terrazzo pattern. The curtains are a neutral suede that we haven't replaced yet because they aren't desperately out of place. I work in there 3 days a week and the wall colour works well throughout the day.

Have you thought about using the room for more than one thing? I know it sounds obvious but it was only during lockdown when I was sweltering in the conservatory that I realised we had a whole room that was only used for a night or two every month. I had been complaining about our house being too small Blush. I decided to make our guest room my home office/ dressing room when we don't have guests. Just a simple set up with an IKEA malm dresser, green velvet chair, some tall malm drawers and a massive mirror. I do my hair and makeup in there. I also have some hooks on the wall to hang tomorrow's outfit so I don't have to find clothes in the dark while DH sleeps. The footprint of space I use is tiny but it's made the world of difference having my own room (DH already had the box room).

I’ve painted my west facing bedroom in Dulux rock salt, so it’s a chalky grey/white and it looks much brighter and fresher than the previous magnolia which was really yellow in the afternoon light. I agree with others about wanting a cosy spare room though. Dulux tranquil dawn is nice
