If you were decorating an empty house…

… before you moved into it, and the kitchen was fine, and there were a few Victorian features, but it was largely a blank canvas… how would you go about deciding on the overall look?

Fantasising ahead of putting in an offer on a place this weekend!

Just go with what you like. We have a Victorian house, and when we moved in it was fairly tasteful but not really to my taste IYSWIM. As we redecorated it got more and more colourful and I love it Smile.

Get some magazines and a cup of tea or Pinterest and a cup of tea and start ripping out pictures or making your own pinterest board. You'll soon see your own style come through. For ease you can paint everything white and add art on the walls. Or go to a farrow and ball shop and ask about their colour service. Or look at local interior designer websites, they're not all high end, can be quite 'normal' houses just renovated with thought.

I like everything! Well, nearly. I guess I would want it to look put together but not really same-y throughout…

Spend as much as you like. Look at some interior decoration magazines and get some ideas too. Visit a local household item store and test out the paints or get advice from a shop worker. You can even talk to a Farrow and Ball paint store worker on Facebook or via their website about paints.

I have found over the years that the stuff I like tends to blend well together. I choose colours and furniture on the basis that I like it, everything else seems to fall into place really. I've never set out to purposely decorate a room with a set idea, I've let them evolve. I also think it's impossible to to decorate/create a home without living in it 'undecorated' first.

I think that’s a really good point but I’m definitely not going to pass up the opportunity to refresh the place before we’re in, with all our mess and young children etc! I’m sure we’ll change things once we’re in, it’s just that initial “vision” I need. I’ve been really enjoying the thread on bedrooms. Now all I need is one for the rest of the house!
