A good double sized mattress. Not top of the range but ‘decent’ for teenagers. Budget about £250.

IKEA hamarvik or hovag. My teenager has the cheaper one and it's really comfy, and I'm sure the more expensive one would be too. (The hovag is more expensive but still only £179 for a double.)

moch · 11/09/2021 10:20

Just had a look, seems like great price. How long has your teen had it for?

Another vote for the IKEA mattresses here, we all have them. Kids have Hovag and they are so comfortable. You might have trouble with getting hold of one though as my friend tried to get a new mattress from there and they were all out of stock. Also read an article in my news feed about how IKEA are struggling to get hold of stock

Oh no! I was pinning my hopes on the Ikea mattress, within budget and good quality.

Just to make sure I’m getting the right thing - Ikea sizes are usually different to normal UK sizes. Is the ‘standard double’ on their website actually a UK standard double?

Following with interest. I have two to replace 😱

abbs1 · 11/09/2021 11:10

We bought our last 2 mattresses from The Mattressman. Excellent quality and not stupidly expensive. We've got the 1000 pocket springs one and its still really good 5 years on.

MrsSchadenfreude · 11/09/2021 11:18

We got ours - it’s a Sealy Posturepedic Pearl from mattressnextday.com I think, or mattressonline for around £200. It’s excellent, really comfortable. They delivered to the bedroom free of charge, took off the packing and took the old mattress away for £20.

hotchocdrinker · 11/09/2021 11:33

@moch we've had the mattress for about 4 years, but given the amount of time he spends in bed that probably equates to 8 years of normal adult use! And it's still good!

hotchocdrinker · 11/09/2021 11:38

@moch I can't comment too much about the 'standard size' as we bought the bed frame from Ikea as well, but i buy normal double sheets from next etc and they fit fine.

jaundicedoutlook · 11/09/2021 12:27

IKEA ones are standard sizes. We’ve got them in our spare rooms and they’re great. John Lewis own brand ones are nice if you want to spend a bit more, as are ‘and so to bed’ mattresses.

moch · 11/09/2021 16:37

Thanks everyone. I’ll checkout the other recommendations well. Can’t wait to get rid of the old mattresses with all the stuffing coming outBlush. I’ve got two to replace as well @SpindleWhorl so value for money of the essence.

IKEA hovag, out of stock in king size but available in double in most stores. We’ve just bought one this week as our bed having had in a separate furnished rental for the last couple of years. Labelled medium/firm and really comfy.

hotchocdrinker · 11/09/2021 22:24

We also have a basic (cheap!) John Lewis double mattress and the ikea one is much much better.

ODFOx · 11/09/2021 22:32

I like a firm mattress and we're very pleased with our Silent night orthopaedic, 4 years on. I see it's in the sale at mattressonline for less than £200. Less than we paid!

hellcatspangle · 11/09/2021 22:35

IKEA hovag

ODFOx · 11/09/2021 22:43

Hovag is 200cm long so it will only fit an IKEA longer bed. Some if the others are 190cm long but not Hovag

hotchocdrinker · 11/09/2021 23:49

@ODFOx, the Hovag does come in standard double size...

Please recommend me a good mattress

Thanks for these extra recommendations.

IKEA hovag definitely. I get lots of compliments Grin

moch · 14/09/2021 14:57

Quick question about the Hovag. Reading between the lines, is this mattress more for children or a guest bed? its meant to be for late teens early twenties with regular use (although not daily).

OP posts:
Misty9 · 14/09/2021 15:02

I use it for my bed (adult!) and have had it 2 years so far. I do use a quilted mattress protector too

hotchocdrinker · 14/09/2021 16:21

My late teen has the hovag, and as I said, it's still comfy after four years' use. Used daily (sometimes for 16-18 hours a day! 😂

moch · 14/09/2021 16:50

Misty & Hotchoc you've put my mind at rest now. Thanks
