Under stairs storage

Just wondering if anyone has converted their under stairs area to pull out drawers for storage.
Any pros / cons?
I’ve been quoted £1400 for 6 drawers. I don’t have a big hallway so it would be nice to have all the shoes stored away neatly as well as hats/gloves but for that price, it is worth it?

Following with interest as this is on my list as part of our rennovation

thelegohooverer · 06/09/2021 10:42

If you can afford it I think it would be a fantastic investment.

Hallways are such a clutter trap, and a very busy part of the house and never have well designed storage solutions!

Unfortunately we have a few more pressing projects so I can’t do similar but I’m very jealous!

KitKatKit · 06/09/2021 10:54

We have an Ikea storage cabinet (it might have been a sideboard actually), with baskets inside to make it look neater. It fits exactly underneath our stairs and looks neat and tidy.
Much more economical!

niki26 · 06/09/2021 12:38

We've booked clever closets to do our understairs - currently booked in for 30th sept but may be pushed back as we are having driveway done first - but I'll be happy to share pics and prices once done.

altiara · 08/09/2021 19:26

@KitKatKit is your under stairs area all open?

@niki26 I’ve got a quote from them!

I was looking for more quotes, but the only other company I found said it could be from £8k down to £500! And what was my budget. Definitely not 8k! Obviously as little as possible 😳

I am very tempted, I imagine my life would be amazingly organised. Instead of tons of shoes thrown in a basket in the hallway that doesn’t fit anything else. Or I throw the shoes away….

We used Clever closets. Had to get them back to tidy a bit of it up but it's ace and well worth the money. My only complaint would be that the wood finish marks very easily and finger dirt isn't coming off readily.

KitKatKit · 08/09/2021 21:30

Yes it's open - attaching a picture, hope it's helpful!

Yes, we have clever closets storage and it's great! Service is great too.

minimilkmaestro · 08/09/2021 21:58

We didn't get drawers, just a couple of little hinged doors (cheaper).

It's hard to see what is in there but I can hide an awful lot of crap under the stairs now...

Notreallyawaitress · 14/09/2021 19:43

Does anyone have a ballpark figure for Clever Closets 3 drawer unit? I’d probably get it flatpack as we’d use a carpenter to configure the rest of the space as it’ll include a dog crate.

Skinnytailedsquirrel · 14/09/2021 19:47

We have a hinged door and a pull out drawer. Both used to store shoes. Fantastic use of space but...a circulation problem. We've just come home from a few weeks away to find our shoes mouldy.
So...(we are about to do this) spur off of an electricity line (don't know if this is the correct terminology) and put in a very low watt heater or fan. It's just because there has been no air circulating that we've had this issue...

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 14/09/2021 19:53

That's sounds a lot but I wish we had had two doors fitted under the stairs (at the side) that open a bit like French doors and we could have fitted out the inside as we wanted.
We have one door underneath the slope of the stairs so the stuff at the back you can't reach.

Moonshine5 · 14/09/2021 20:19

I'm considering designing something fun for mine like a wine rack or to hold books. Houzz.com had lots of unique storage understair photos

Houseplantmad · 14/09/2021 20:27

I got our builder to reconfigure our understairs when we put in a loo. I now have two doors (cut down from Wickes doors). Behind these are two ikea pax pullout baskets for shoes at the bottom and the area above them divided to store coats on one side and the hoover/steam mop on the other the little pointy bit at the bottom of the stairs is for DH’s toolbox, bike helmets etc. Cost around £450. It’s brilliant and has transformed our hallway

I don't know how big your stairs are, or number of flights you have, but we could have only have a wine rack (for daily use) or a book shelves for our colouring books.
mineofuselessinformation · 14/09/2021 20:38

If it's deep enough, you could go for two lots of kallax, one in front of the other.
Use the ones at the back for things you don't need so often, but everything is easily accessible.
I have this in my good-sized downstairs loo, and it's brilliant. I may have too much crap in the house though.

toothpicklover · 14/09/2021 20:42

Loads of videos on YouTube showing you how to make it yourself.

Love looking at under stair storage ideas 😂

Notaroadrunner · 14/09/2021 20:47

We have one tall press to fit ironing board/Hoover/mop - also has a shelf on top. In the middle we have a press with pull out shelves - so handy as being under stairs the space is quite deep. You could sit shoes or anything on these shelves. And lastly we have 2 pull out drawers in the lowest section. I didn't want all drawers as I imagine in this house, stuff would just get thrown in and some would be lost forever Grin

Rummikub · 14/09/2021 20:59

I’ve got drawers fitted under the stairs and keep shoes in them. Feels more organised.

TeamRick · 14/09/2021 21:25

Clever Closets did ours!
3 drawers and around £650/£700.

They are brilliant!

We just used a local builder/joiner for about £600. Slightly different as we sectioned the cupboard into 2, keeping the door/walk-in element for coats/ironing board etc, but the shorter half was blocked off and then opened out into the hall. We then had a sliding push operated section installed which has shelves and drawers for shoes etc.

altiara · 15/09/2021 20:31

Thanks for the great photos.
I’ve now booked in with clever closets!
Really looking forward to it. Have just bought my own home after separating with stb ex H last year so cannot wait to have amazing storage solutions!

It's fantastic, our hall is always tidy now and it saves so much time getting ready. We got a local carpenter to do ours. 6 drawers and a tall cupboard for under £700.
