What would you put in this gap?

I have a 55cm gap by the sideboard, the door to the kitchen is generally open so hides the gap. I was thinking a stool or beanbag etc for extra seating when people are round. Other ideas included a desk if one that small exists? With a Tuck under stool. Some kind of storage unit?

Excuse the picture don't want photos being identified!

What would you put in this gap?

Confused - are you asking what to out behind the door? Aesthetically no need to put anything.

Practically if you need the space what would be most useful to you? A beanbag won't sit neatly - it will push the door to.

Folding chairs on hooks, Ikea-style, but nicer chairs.

Practically really! Extra seating or some kind of desk would be best.

I don't see how a desk would work there - if you sat at it what would happen if someone opened the kitchen door?

teaforoneandacoffee · 31/08/2021 00:38

Do you need the door on? Could you take it off?
Take it off and have a book shelf?
Centralise whatever that unit is already there on the floor and put a large piece of art above it?
If you could move the unit that's already there on the floor maybe have a narrow storage unit either ride with lighting on?

Sorry I can't make out what the floor unit is

teaforoneandacoffee · 31/08/2021 00:38

Either side**

mneters · 31/08/2021 00:47

Sorry the floor unit is IKEA besta, I've now put little legs on it so it is off the floor as a sideboard.

I'd have a bookshelf.

mneters · 31/08/2021 00:51

I could move the unit to the other side and have the desk on the left side as the cupboards are rarely used.

I think a 55cm desk may be non existent though so perhaps just a little thing like this that won't be seen but can be used as storage/ extra seat.

What kind of bookshelf would you have? Just plain white? Or a storage cabinet?

I would love to take the door off but it is a rented house! The living room is very awkward with two doors and a fireplace!

Do you mean the gap is 55cm wide? How deep is the space?

mneters · 31/08/2021 01:03

Yes 55cm wide and about 44cm deep

I wouldn't fill that gap, it's perfect for the door opening . If you are really tight for storage you could put a large bookcase on the wall above sideboard so is more like a dresser?

ErrolTheDragon · 31/08/2021 01:20

If the other unit is white IKEA I'd probably get one of their bookcases. We have bookshelves in most of our odd corners though; of course if you read mostly on screens it wouldn't be so useful.

fallfallfall · 31/08/2021 01:28

could you move the side board behind the door so the gap is more visible and what you place there more practical? other than hooks holding chairs or what ever else you choose to put on hooks i don't see it being useful.

Bluesheep8 · 31/08/2021 08:00

I can't see a gap?
I'm not sure why you'd put something behind a door tbh

Dotoallasyouwouldbedoneby · 06/09/2021 01:53

Drop-leaf desk in either location and remove the door.
