Want to paint my kitchen a shade of white - which paint?

It's currently a creamy colour with quite a lot of yellow in it. I want to paint it a cool white. I have navy tiles and very low ceilings! Was thinking a brilliant white for the ceiling and woodwork then a softer white for the walls. I'm very inexperienced with decorating! Kitchen is badly ventilated so walls can get greasy so must be easy to clean. I like Farrow and Ball colours but I know some people say the paint is hard to work with.

We used Dulux white cotton for walls, ceiling and woodwork in our kitchen, and I'm really pleased with it. It's quite a neutral white but softer than pure brilliant white. They do a washable version for kitchens.

Does it have any yellow in it? I don't want any yellow at all. I will check it out thank you!

Go for a white with blue or lilac undertones (look for names like "architect's white" - I made that one up! - or similar to indicate a cool tone). But wouldn't paint your walls and ceiling different shades of white, just go with one shade for the whole lot, will look much more cohesive.

White is the hardest colour to get right IMO, but as a consequence most paint companies will tell you what the undertones are to help you out. You will need tester pots, the end result will vary so much according to the size/ aspect etc of your room.

Great advice thanks. I will get testers.

Do I need to prepare the walls with anything other than giving them a good sugar soap?

The F&B modern emulsion is wipeable.

TheCanyon · 16/08/2021 17:10

The B&Q Good Home white paint is ridiculously good for how cheap it is.

Zzzzfthg · 16/08/2021 17:14

Dulux Timeless

Bryonyshcmyony · 16/08/2021 17:17

I think Timeless is quite yellow

you'll need a proper kitchen paint as its badly ventilated and gets greasy
(i dont often recommend kitchen paint as scrubbable is usually enough for the standard well ventilated kitchen)

get it mixed....dulux/crown/valspar at a mixing centre.....they can colour match to the farrow and ball colour of your choice at a fraction of the cost

gardeninggirl68 · 16/08/2021 17:30

when they colour match your colours they will be able to tell what colourants go into the base

sometimes people say they want a certain paint but zero yellow.....then when i scan it the computer tells me it contains yellows the mixed paint in certain lights will show a yellow hue

ask what colourants are in it to be sure its non yellow

Try F&B Blackened or Strong White

Bryonyshcmyony · 16/08/2021 17:34

@MaraScottie

Try F&B Blackened or Strong White
I am going to try both of these thanks

I currently have f and b cotswold cream (?) and its cleanable so I must have had the modern emulsion.

We have dulux mist white and it’s a blue/grey white.

beggingforsleep · 16/08/2021 18:22

Blackened is very grey/blue.

I'm just painting over f&b Wimborne white with LG shirting as Wimborne was far too yellow

Bryonyshcmyony · 16/08/2021 18:49

Can't have anything too blue as have navy tiles! Think I want a nice crisp white but not a brilliant white.

Shirting looks really nice actually

I've just spent a small fortune on samples of white paint. Can confirm that Dulux Timeless and Jasmine White have yellow tints. White Cotton is a cool white with grey / blue tints. Crown Milk Bottle (which I think is only available in the tougher Kitchen Matt) is a very neutral white. I've gone with Little Greene Slaked Lime which is also neutral. However, I found that some of the samples (especially the Little Greene) looked totally different on each of the four walls I tried them on.

GCAcademic · 16/08/2021 18:58

Yes, Shirting is nice and not at all yellow. I've done all the woodwork in my house with it.

Zzzzfthg · 16/08/2021 19:38

That's interesting, I've never thought Timeless was yellow tinged in either of the houses I've painted it in!

Bryonyshcmyony · 16/08/2021 19:41

My kitchen has windows on three sides so the walls do all look different anyway
Is the LG paint nice

OP posts:
GCAcademic · 16/08/2021 19:46

LG paint is excellent, it has a lot of pigment and the coverage is much better than Farrow and Ball. For a kitchen, you'd be best with the intelligent Matt (wipeable) rather than the absolute Matt. The Slaked Lime was a cool grey-ish white on one wall and more of a greige-white on another. But no yellow in it.

Bryonyshcmyony · 16/08/2021 19:49

That also sounds nice. I do want a nice bright white on the ceiling though as its so low

Dulux rock salt?
Although I’ve got brilliant white in my kitchen.

altiara · 17/08/2021 18:36

Painted last house in rock salt, looked lovely.
