Built in wardrobes

We have recently had an extension built and are in the process of considering bedroom furniture.
Are built-in wardrobes worth considering? I imagine they cost considerably more than stand-alone but I have no idea how much more. They look so much nicer though and I like the idea of maximising space with a bespoke design.
If you have recently had some fitted, would you mind sharing who fitted them, how much they cost and whether you'd recommend them?
Thanks.

Ours were done by a local company 10 years ago and cost about £3.5k. They had done the wardrobes in our previous house just before we bought it and they were an excellent use of space and hold significantly more than standard wardrobes whilst looking so much more tidy.

Oh sorry, just saw you said it was a local company. Do you know if there price was comparable with the bigger companies?

I bought plain shaker style wardrobes from IKEA for about £1000. I got three doubles and a single to fill a full wall of a bedroom. I then got a local handyman to fit a plinth from the top of the wardrobe to the ceiling so that they look like fitted wardrobes. I also bought nicer handles than those available at IKEA.

I thought initially they would look cheap so agreed to this solution as a temporary measure when we moved in. However, they look really good (IMO) and we won't be replacing them. Everyone assumes I've had them made to measure.

Hope that helps
