Could I just canvas opinion as to what people are after with cushions as I’m thinking of making some to sell on Etsy.

Do you particularly look for piped cushions or not fussed?
Do you particularly look for zipped closures or not fussed?

Hoping you won’t mind helping, I prefer piped and zipped myself but I’m not sure if that’s just because that is how I was taught, I could just be making life harder for myself as they are much easier to make without those elements! Anything else you’d like to add about cushions I’d love to hear! TIA

I prefer piped as the finish on cushions look better to me, also zipped, I have some very large cushions (came with the sofas) which have one large button on the back in a kind of an envelope fashion. Really gets on my nerves as they dont always lie flat and the inside keeps poking through so all I could see was the cream calico lining.

Have also had cushions with 3 buttons at the top, hated the untidy way they ended up after they were used, always having to re arrange them straight. For some reason buttons always remind me of Ikea covers.

Have just bought some velvet ones for the autumn/winter in some rich colours and they have a small row of velvet pompoms as a trim.

I also like bolster cushions for the bed, in rich silk or velvet, have a couple of really nice linen ones for the summer. Contrasting piping is another favourite of mine as well. And when we did have some nice weather....I bought some light bright garden covers for outside, but the choice was limited but they did look nice on the chairs.

But then again I am a tad fussy about cushions and may have an addiction!

Nice to hear from another fussy cushion lover! I also like contrast piping and love pom poms and all trims really! Maybe there is a gap in the garden cushion market then? Do you mean seat pads to fit your furniture or just throw cushions for outside?

Well cushions for chairs outside not seat pads, I have plain pads on the outside furniture which came as standard, large and small but wanted some bright cushions as well, not just stripped ones either.

Nice just to make yourself comfortable when say reading etc and not use the ones from the house. I just keep them in the outdoor box so they are handy. Also use in the hammock on the grass etc, so they are good quality foam, not feather of course!

It's the colour and fabric that attracts me. I'm usually looking for a cushion to go with something specific. I like piping as it gives a neater finish though it's not essential. I'm not fussed about zips or buttons, either is fine. I don't like embellishments like pompoms, they are a bit fussy for me, but I do like a nice bit of contrast embroidery.

Gosh, I didn't realise I was so opinionated about cushions! Grin

We are all so passionate about cushions DramaAlpaca! Thanks for the feedback, it’s hard to know what people might be searching for on Etsy for cushions, like you say you’d usually be looking for something specific to go with something else so it will be different for everyone.

Zips and washable fabrics.

In this house people pull cushions onto their laps then spill drinks/crumbs on them. They get thrown on the floor as extra seats and generally rolled around on. ( by toddlers obviously not me :-)

No reason not to have nice colours/prints and still be able to wash the covers. Also if standard sizes can change covers for different seasons without having to buy new inner cushions.

Do you use a tapered cut OP? I make my own and taper the sides - helps to avoid 'bunny ear' corners.

Piping is lovely. Oxford edging is smart too.
Zips are essential IMO.

I'm another cushion lover but buy for the colour, pattern and fabric.

Wouldn't buy anything with pompoms or trims, and am not fussed about piping. Most of mine don't have piping.

Washable is best but I buy non-washable if they fit the bill otherwise.

You won't be able to cater for everyone, that's clear!

Good quality full length zips, not piped. Easy to clean.
