Help needed - grey sofa colour scheme

I could really do with some help.

I've just ordered a charcoal grey sofa for my lounge and am struggling with what colour curtains and cushions to put with it.

I've thought about silver but am worried about it looking too grey. I had thought about having silver cushions with another colour as well but just don't know.

I'm normally quite decisive but I can't make a decision and nothing seems to look right.

If any one can help - especially if you can include photos - I'd be so grateful

Anything goes with charcoal grey. I've got lots of auberginey accessories with my grey carpets and furniture. The rest is light grey and ivory. A bit dull, probably but I like it.

NotMyCat · 06/08/2021 14:38

I have greens and blues

To avoid it being too grey, make sure the curtains are a light silver or silver grey. Get cushions in the same colour as the curtains, plus more cushions in a bright colour to liven it up. Bright pink would look good, or turquoise. Add a rug that tones with the cushions. Charcoal grey is a good choice because everything goes with it, which I think is why you are having trouble.

Thanks for your replies.

I had thought about teal cushions but am worried they'll be a bit dark against the charcoal.

Turquoise would be good but I can't seem to find any. All I keep finding is duck egg blue or teal.

Do you think a silver cushion with a smaller coloured cushion in front would be ok or be too many cushions?

I’m going grey and mustard in our lounge redecoration. Dusky pink is also nice but as Drama says lots will go - making the choice vast, verging on overwhelming.

For me a silver cushion and smaller one in front would be too many cushions but you gowith what you like.

Bluntness100 · 07/08/2021 08:54

Honestly don’t also get grey /silver curtains cushions etc that’s the very definition of too grey

Lots of colours go, greens, blush pinks, blues, pick something different to warm it up.

A rich red?

Primrosefields · 07/08/2021 09:20

Our living room has a charcoal 2 seater and 3 seater. We previously had red with it. Now we have silver and navy.

Which Hue Family do you think your grey sofa belongs?

Every paint colour readily available on the high street, plus the surface of every fabric, cushion, tile, stone, wood flooring belongs to an identifiable Hue Family - including all greys, beiges, blacks, whites, near neutral colours too.

Colour relationships apply to those, just as much as to obviously coloured colours.

Hold some more saturated colours near your sofa and see which it has the closest affinity with. There’s then a reasoned starting point for introducing other colours to the mix.

I think my problem is I'm completely overwhelmed by the colour choices. Normally I have a vague idea what I'd like, find curtains and go from there.

For the first time in 25 years we're doing the lounge completely from scratch - new everything! I think because of this i don't have to consider anything we already have so I'm lost.

I've previously had a cream sofa so could have deep rich colours but I'm worried they might make the room too dark.

I like the blush pink but DH isn't keen. Turquoise would brighten it up, same as mustard.

Can anyone recommend a good curtain shop? I've normally gone to Dunelm as they have a good range but I've not seen any that I like. I've never bought online curtains before as I worry about the quality.

Try Blinds2go, (they also do curtains) you can order loads of samples, I had this problem and pinned the samples up on the wall for about 3 weeks and was definitely drawn to one colour.

Primrosefields · 07/08/2021 16:51

I was also worried it would be too dark but it isn't as 3 of the walls are pale grey,so it lifts the room. We got our curtains from Dunelm. They are called Cloudmont.

You can never have too many cushions!

Dull greeny!

hugglesfor4 · 10/08/2021 14:54

You've all been so helpful.

I've decided (I think!) on teal/turquoise and have ordered 6 cushions in different shades/patterns to take to the sofa shop and check how they look.

Teal will look really nice as I think will 'brights' or other jewel colours.

We shot ourselves in the foot a bit by getting dark purple curtains made for our living room when we moved in (had to be custom made due to size/shape of bay). Meant when we decorated a few years later we had to encorporate the purple. I have dark purple, dusky pink and one grey cushion.

altiara · 14/08/2021 21:38

I’ve got a mid grey sofa and have dark teal, hot pink and multi coloured (teal/turquoise/pink/mustard) cushions.
I might have too many cushions. (No I don’t!)

1frenchfoodie · 15/08/2021 06:36

Sounds gorgeous @altiara what colour walls do you have with that?

altiara · 15/08/2021 10:34

@1frenchfoodie - I have a teal feature wall (teal touch) and the other walls are timeless. The teal is very bold and striking so I needed vibrant cushions to tie it together.
Just bought my own house after splitting with ex last year so wanted to do something bold and different to before.

perfectasalways · 15/08/2021 18:26

I have gone for a green feature wall with green patterned curtains. The carpet is also grey so I don't want to overdo the grey. Accent colours for cushions are ochre and orange. Mind you I don't have the sofa yet!

perfectasalways · 15/08/2021 18:28

Remainder of my walls are white.

perfectasalways · 15/08/2021 19:50

www.dfs.co.uk/pongo/pgo1zcpza OP this is the couch I have bought and this is where I have taken my inspiration

perfectasalways · 15/08/2021 19:52

Haven't gone for black and white - my rug is beautiful, almost like a piece of artwork. My son has designed me cushion covers in an ochre colour - just waiting for them to arrive. Just need a throw now and I'm sorted and oh of course the couch which is supposed to be coming in a couple of weeks.

CommanderBurnham · 15/08/2021 20:35

I don't think it needs to be matchy matchy. I'm sure the teal will be nice but teal is a difficult colour to complement (bitter experience).
