I've just been reading an article on Dark Academia and it reminded me of a thread ages ago on MN about something similar only I'm sure it has a different name. Dark walls, dark rooms. Anyone remember what I'm talking about?

Here's the link to the article I just read in case anyone is interested.

That's great! I didn't know what this style of decoration was called. I love it and now I know what to google. I was thinking of buying this painting : reflectionsandglory.com/oversized-art-vintage-floral-1-8m-tall/. Do you know if that would qualify as Dark Academia and if it would fit with a dark academia interior design scheme?

MyOtherProfile · 02/08/2021 14:32

Oh yes I'm sure it would!

I really like that look! Almost the opposite of what my house looks like but I really like it!

MyOtherProfile · 02/08/2021 16:52

Same. I could imagine myself doing it in one room but not the whole house as it's so different.

I still think there was a thread about similar decor ages ago giving it a different name!

Haha saw your post and thought dark academia was like the dark web for academics !!
But yeah - I really like this look. Have a fairly neutral home decor scheme but redecorating small room atm and might experiment with darker walls in that room. Really like the mid toned grey/blue I tried out in the living room.

I love this look. We are renovating, and will soon be decorating a dark (as in north facing) snug with original beams and a black wood burning stove in a huge fireplace. I’m tempted to give it a go, although the rest of the house is lighter and more neutral in colour.
Can anyone suggest places to explore this look further? Rockett St George? Maybe Abigail Ahern? And local antique shops and auctions of course. Any other suggestions?

bananananadakrie · 02/08/2021 20:19

Definitely Abigail Ahern, her blog has some great stuff on this. Love the look Hopefully moving house soon and planning on making the dinky north facing master bedroom cosy and dark! Check out itsonlytaken10years on Instagram as well, less of the academia but gorgeous dark rooms with bursts of colour.

MyOtherProfile · 03/08/2021 07:31

Abigail Ahern is who I was thinking of from a previous thread. I knew it began with A! Thank you.

I love this look. I don't follow fashions. My last house and this house is decorated in this aesthetic. I've collected antiques for years and the trend for pale neutrals and pale grey passed me by! Nice to think I'll be trendy for a bit Grin

If you like this sort of look have a look at the Denis Severs house Spitalfield. If you Google lots of pictures turn up.
dennissevershouse.co.uk/gallery
You can visit. The kitchen is amazing.

I'm trying to create a similar look to the red bedroom....but still trying to source fabrics before decorating.

First pic is Denis Severs Hall. I would post pics of my house but it would be too identifying. If anyone wants advice on antique furniture I'm happy to help.
