Fireplace alcove decoration

I'm trying to figure out what to put in our empty fireplace alcove? Any advice is very welcome.

• a built in cabinet and shelves
• freestanding unit or large basket with art above
• large picture
• tall plant
• something interesting like a rocking chair or musical instrument or rowing oars or whatever you are into which is more of an object

Different things I different rooms here. Massive, heavy framed portrait painting on the mantle in our bedroom, pretty much touches the ceiling and is almost the width of the mantle. Large landscape mirror in the playroom. Large landscape painting in the sitting room. Small bits and pieces in Ds’ bedroom (nick back type stuff) and then some low bunting. Lots of different sizes paintings/prints in the study.

Sorry - I read this as above a mantle piece. I have no idea why. Please ignore!!
