Distressing a mirror - advice pls - pics attached

I have a large mirror with a pine frame and would like to make it look like my other mirror that has been painted. I've attached a photo of the pine frame and then two photos of the painted one.

The thing is, I can't work out if the painted one was done in gold first and then white, and the gold distressed off, or the other way round!

Can anyone advise me how to achieve the same look on the unpainted mirror? Or maybe you have some other ideas you could share with me? Thanks!Smile

Pretty sure it's white first then gold. I would paint it white so no pine shows. Then add the gold and remove an equivalent amount of the gold immediately. Gold paint or gold leaf ( when you'd just miss bits out rather than remove) would work. Look at some videos on YouTube for how to do gold.

I'd say white first then gold and sanded off.

Do the coat first then use a candle to rub wax where you would like the white to be seen, then use gold paint.

The gold paint won't cover the waxed ares, then use a very light sandpaper to tidy up.

The white coat first is obviously what I meant Blush
