I'm sick of coming home to a trail of muddy footprints all over the hall and up the stairs and will obviously keep nagging until the 'shoes off at the door' message sinks in sometime never but current small door mat is rubbish so need to find more robust and effective solution as 3 boys walking across fields home from school = daily mess 
So, hit me with your recommendations for a decent sturdy outdoor mat (coir & metal look good but do they work?), a big indoor non patterned doormat and then some sort of hall runner that is ideally washable. I do like the look of the pale Persian style runners but not sure they'll be very forgiving with muddy shoes. What do you all have? Hall pictures welcome as I'm lacking inspiration.
