New house - big hall - carpet or hard floor

Been told that carpet in a big hall in the country is "common" what do people think? Existing carpet is old and knackered so I will need to replace it. What would you do? Thx

Hard floor. So much easier to keep clean. I have a gorgeous rug on it though.

Disclaimer: I detest carpets, nothing to do with being 'common' Confused

Hard floor for hallway is better, easier to clean and carpet would wear quickly as it’s a highly frequented area. You can get a large rug to soften the look

We used to live rurally, hard flooring all the way.

Once you’ve lived in the countryside certain things just make sense. Agas, boot-scrapers, turtle mats, you realise why their so popular.

Mines running right now. Brilliant inventions.

Hardwood floors or tiles! We have stone floors and they are a medium grey. They don’t really show mud and dirt and are very easy to clean.

What’s under the carpet? Might be something good

Lotty32 · 08/07/2021 22:29

Will definitely investigate what's under the carpet - something else to discover!!

How old is the house? Our ground floor had hideous carpet covering herringbone parquet that is 100 years old!

Lotty32 · 08/07/2021 22:37

Parts are hundreds of years old
Here's hoping! X

Hopefully you’ve got parquet or tiles too.

Get a really good big outside door mat too, garden trading do a big metal one.

I put small checkerboard tiling in my front hall (big old farmhouse). Looks great and very forgiving to any dirt.

Loving these suggestions please keep them coming! X

I have a big hall upstairs and chose to carpet. It’s much smaller downstairs so it’s stone tiles.
