Stair carpet vs painted stairs?

I’ll be getting rid of my current stair carpet when I decorate. I’m currently in debate with my daughter about whether we should put in a new carpet or paint them.

Got older children and two dogs so it
gets a reasonable of wear and tear and muddy feet (will attempt a slipper only rule but it never gets strictly followed).

Just wondering if anyone has pro and con for painted stairs and which type of paint is best. I’ve always had carpet so wondering if it will be too noisy painted but easier to keep clean?

Unless you have very high quality wood where the stairs were designed to be uncarpeted (and varnished not painted) I’d say carpet. This is because of the noise not only of being on the stairs but the acoustics, it’s colder, if you paint them it can flake off easily because of the traffic and also dust gathers quite visibly. If you like the exposed look maybe go for a runner up the middle with paint either side?

Painted stairs are sooooo noisy.

I’m not a great carpet lover, but would not really consider uncarpeted stairs except in public buildings. Far too noisy and increased risk of falling, particularly if something is spilled.

Grand sweeping marble, uncarpeted perhaps, but otherwise a carpet.

I have lived with us carpeted stairs for years and I hated it. The dust gathered almost as soon as you'd finished hoovering, washing stairs is a nightmare, if you slip by god it hurts, paint that takes a lot of traffic doesn't last long so you have to repaint regularly, they're loud, cold and uncomfortable to walk on.
I was sooooo relieved when I moved to a house with carpet on the stairs, it felt like real luxury.

I have wooden, painted stairs with carpet squares in the middle of each step. They do show dust and dirt easily, but I quite like the overall look of them.

We used to have stair runners on a painted stair - looked nice but it was the first place in the house to look dusty/dirty - if you’re really on top of hoovering it might be ok.

I have painted stairs (Railings F&B) which look fantastic.
I also have teens and dogs. Noise isn't a problem though. (I think mine are very solid stairs) . Neither is slipping - I think carpets are more slippery.

BUT they show up dust like nothing else. I'd need to hoover them 3 times a week probably for them too look good all the time.
I'm seriously thinking of getting a runner for mine.

I have just had LVL flooring (Amtico) fitted on my stairs. I love it! No more cats scratching the stair carpet bald within a few weeks of fitting, no more grubby carpet in the centre of the house!

A quick wipe down and it looks brand new again. I am a convert.

Anyone I know who had painted stairs has since carpeted over them.

Naked stairs are so noisy. I wouldn't contemplate if any of the following apply,
you are attached to another property,
you allow shoes on in the house,
you have small children,
you have pets that go upstairs.

Thank you for all your thoughts and suggestions.

My daughter likes the painted stair look and I would prefer a carpet. Should add my daughter is grown up and keen to help and get involved with the decorating but think I will keep with my original preference on this one.
