Does anyone have no actual colour scheme at all for their house?

I'm just wondering this because there is so much talk about different colours, colour accents, etc and we are moving house soon and I'm thinking just how bad would it be if I didn't worry what colours went with what, what's fashionable, and just stuck stuff together? I admit this is part laziness and part lack of money but I also like colour and don't even mind colour clashes within reason. Has anyone done this and feel it looks good?

Well, each of my rooms is different if that’s what you mean.
The house doesn’t have a colour scheme but each room might.
I’m a fan of colour and fabric myself so like to make the most of it in each space.
Look at colour theory of you want help to pick things that work together.

@Smartiepants79 that's a bit more what I mean, as I certainly can't manage a whole house colour scheme. I'm just wondering what it would be like if I just put a load of stuff together that I like and not have any plan for it at all. We will have plain wooden floors and white walls and it is a fairly dull 1970s house. We have a mix of furniture, nothing new, and lots of art work and mirrors for the walls if that helps. Just wondering if anyone else has just gone with colour, texture, plants, etc and not planned it particularly?

I just stick things together, if I like it I find a place for it. There's probably an element of a scheme because I obviously like the same sort of stuff, but nothing really matches.

ChiefBabySniffer · 15/05/2021 13:11

ITs your house, you can literally do whatever mattress you happy

Smartiepants79 · 15/05/2021 13:13

Sounds fabulous.
A real home with a personality.
Each thing has meaning and memory it’s how I like it!

alloverthecarpetagain · 15/05/2021 13:22

Thank you, all of you - I know I shouldn't need to ask this but when I look on Pinterest or somewhere like that, it's all so matchy matchy, nothing is eclectic or quirky, other than the extremely grand houses that would look fabulous whatever they did!

My hone has evolved over the years, I don't really do colour schemes as such, but I'm not a fan of grey and my preferred colours are dark red, navy and a forest green. Walls and carpet beige/cream/neutral. It works for us... the kitchen is cream/light wood and the lovely le creuset blue same as the Mumsnet background some of the pans were bought late 80s

Susie477 · 15/05/2021 13:29

Yes.

Definitely no colour schemes or themes in my house. Neither of us is remotely interested in fashions or trends in interior decor. It’s just not on our radar at all.

alloverthecarpetagain · 15/05/2021 13:42

This is good to hear. How does it look?

Everything matching makes me feel that people have no soul.

Our house is painted white pretty much everywhere with a mixture of wooden, tiled and carpeted floors.

Furniture is mostly Indian/Mexican/whatever we liked at the second-hand shop. Mixture of leather and fabric chairs and sofas. Lots and lots of original art on the walls and lots of plants.

justanotherneighinparadise · 15/05/2021 13:57

We have a beautiful neutral colour we had made that runs through the whole house with the exception of the children’s bedrooms.

MindtheBelleek · 15/05/2021 13:58

I hate anything that looks interior designed. Our house has off-white walls and wooden floorboards with kilims or Turkish rugs throughout. Most of the colour comes from art on the walls, but they mostly have bookshelves.

I'm not sure about having no soul, but everything matching makes me feel they have just gone and spent a load of money all in one go at the same shop. Even if I wanted to, it just seems very wasteful to chuck out all the stuff we have, eg. the 20 year old sofa, the table my friend borrowed for 10 years that I'd -given up on- forgotten about, the chairs our old dog scratched... I suppose I'm just wondering if it all will look a mess!

So white walls and neutral flooring is a good place to start, by the sound of it, which is good to hear. We have moved house a lot recently, so haven't managed to establish our style for a while as it's all been a bit transient but I'm hoping this next house will be for a while.

Each room has a colour scheme but that is about it. I like variety.
I dont mind seeing some uniformity in other peoples' houses, looks quite nice. But I wouldnt want to look at it all the time in mine.

853ax · 15/05/2021 14:04

No schemes or themes here.
I like things having a use or story.
Understand what you mean about photos of theme, matchy matchy 'dressed' rooms. With influencer s ect it everywhere!
I have a friend with that type house looks lovely but she lives alone so can make those decisions.
My children like touching, using things and also have lots toys, art, books which they want in particular places. I feel each member house hold has a say as we all live here so don't take away their special things.
Enjoy your new house happy memories better than staged photos.

alloverthecarpetagain · 15/05/2021 14:11

@853ax that sounds lovely with your children's needs taken into account in the house. @lightand I think that's also what I mean - I can admire matchy stuff but I don't want it.

I suppose I also have to hold back or it all gets too eccentric - we used to have a Victorian house where anything looked good as as the house itself just takes over the whole look, but now it's more of a blank canvas, I suppose I'm feeling our stuff is more centre stage.

If I was moving into a new home I would think more about colour schemes etc.

But currently I love my home which is just full of things I like and no colour scheme whatsoever but as I like colour there is colour in every room. I like a warm cosy home not a cold feeling one which is all grey, white or beige imho.

Divineswirls · 15/05/2021 14:33

That said all my walls are white except for some wallpaper in the living room because 4 large white walls felt too cold and clinical.

Fixitup2 · 15/05/2021 14:45

We don’t have a colour theme, we just choose what we like but it all seems to go together ok. Each room is completely different, bedrooms are red, lilac, green and pale grey so all completely different. I don’t want to be a clone and don’t like fast fashion which I think a lot of interiors is going like sadly.

BackforGood · 15/05/2021 14:54

...... well there's your issue. The overwhelming majority of the population don't even look on Pinterest, let alone post on there.
My house is my home. It is where we live, it isn't an art gallery.
It contains a mix of things we've acquired over the year that are practical and useful and fit in the rooms. It isn't a place for people to come and view, it is a place to live in.
Do what you want with your home that makes you happy - there are no rules you have to follow

SweatyBetty20 · 15/05/2021 14:56

I suppose I have in a way but only by accident - I really don’t like pinks, oranges, yellows etc so all the rooms in my house are a mix of cream, beige, and muted blues and greens. No themes as I’m not into fast trends because I can’t afford/don’t want to replace things every few years, so no peacock wallpaper or rose gold or brass fittings, just mid-shade wooden furniture or neutral soft furnishings. I’m quite minimalist in taste and not really into patterns or statement walls etc.

NewMatress · 15/05/2021 14:59

My house is basically stuff we've had since we got married mixed with bits and pieces we've been given or acquired over the mast 30 years. Very little of the furniture was bought for this house and I can't be doing with dust gatherers decorative items.

Fizbosshoes · 15/05/2021 15:08

My friend moved a couple of years ago and gutted and renovated the whole house. Every room is a shade of grey or white. It looks amazing and really stylish (I think she used to be an interior designer) but in my own house I prefer some colour.

We cant afford to do a whole house overhaul so all our rooms are decorated at different times....with the colour we want in that room. Weve got walls that are sage green, dark red, cream, grey and some that are wall papered. There is no theme, it's just what we like.
I've heard of people here redecorating every 2 or 3 years. I feel like youd constantly be decorating! and cant deal with the enormous amount of mess DH creates when he does any decorating or diy however small

EssexLioness · 15/05/2021 15:47

We have a colour scheme of sorts. It is a small home so feels much more welcoming and put together that way imo. Wooden floors throughout, complementary furniture, though not all matching which means it’s easy to swap things around on occasion. All the walls are off white. Accessories are neutrals, pink and red, with a few touches of green (mostly in way of plants). Artwork is chosen based on what we love, but go well with the overall Look. My vision for our home is modern country cottage, which fits our semi rural location. We don’t like a lot of stuff on display so overall this all helps our rather tiny home look and feel much bigger and open than it is. It’s not a trendy house by any stretch of the imagination but we frequently get lots of compliments and we love it. By having an idea of the sort of look we like, ialsmakes shopping easier, a bit like having a particular clothes style that is you - it means you can instantly see whether something fits with the overall look. This approach isn’t for everyone but we love it and it helps create a cohesive look. Home design doesn’t come naturally so this is an easy way for me to create a beautiful home as I don’t have the eye for a more eclectic look. I think there is a real skill in that, which I am definitely lacking!
