Does anyone have no actual colour scheme at all for their house?

I'm just wondering this because there is so much talk about different colours, colour accents, etc and we are moving house soon and I'm thinking just how bad would it be if I didn't worry what colours went with what, what's fashionable, and just stuck stuff together? I admit this is part laziness and part lack of money but I also like colour and don't even mind colour clashes within reason. Has anyone done this and feel it looks good?

This is very interesting to hear from different people. I am not lacking confidence in choices for the house, but just pondering maybe on whether I should plan a bit more rather than just let it happen. As pp have said, I've been on Pinterest too much! I think the nicest compliment anyone ever gave me about our house was that coming into it was like being given a great big hug, though I looked for the barb in that for quite a while, unnecessarily as it happens.

All my rooms are a different colour. It has never crossed my mind to try try coordinate rooms in any way. We have 3 reception rooms plus kitchen downstairs. Two are blue (different blues), one is green and one is yellow.

White walls depress me.

We did just replace floor in the lounge and the study and did the same one in both because it was easier but walls are different colours.

alloverthecarpetagain · 15/05/2021 17:51

@DappledThings I love colour as well - I almost feel that I have enough colour without the walls as well, if that makes sense? I love textiles and lots of different textures, so I don't want to cram too much in. But if white walls depress me, I'll paint them, definitely.

Coming at it from a different angle...
I actually do love Pinterest and well put together homes. We redecorate as often as we fancy and I’ve had lots of colour schemes. However, right now our house is simple, white walls and wooden floors downstairs, carpet upstairs. Furniture is fairly eclectic and nothing matches as such. This is common amongst my stylish friends at the moment too - I really think people are enjoying a trend of non-matchy at the moment. It’s a reaction against the grey then navy then mustard then light pink perhaps! So go wild and feel on trend!

Piepinkie · 15/05/2021 18:50

I’ve always just brought things I liked. I’d rather things have meaning. I’ve only become aware that a lot of people don’t do that in the last few years. I think matchy matchy is quite a recent thing. I see a lot of Facebook marketplace/local selling sites with a load of plum/teal/mustard cushions, lightshades, ornaments etc... being sold as “nothing wrong with them just changed colour scheme” which I think is a bit sad tbh and wasteful.

I often see large (and expensive!) Items of furniture on our local fb page because people have changed colour scheme or redone a room. One was a sofa that was 6 months old and they'd changed colour scheme. Another was a kitchen that was 3 years old!Confused

That is quite alien to me, to spend thousands on something that would not be used for very long. (no idea how much the kitchen would have been!) I'd want the item to last for at least 5 years....however it's good if you're looking for a bargain! I suppose it's not too wasteful if you're reselling the item?

rosegoldwatcher · 15/05/2021 19:36

Here we have white wall or shades thereof, neutral carpets/tiled floors and cream and white painted furniture.
The colour in a room is in the curtains and soft furnishings and each room, whilst having their own colour pallet, is different from each other room.

I really don't like the tendency to chuck it all out and start anew approach that some folk have.
One of my adult nieces moves frequently and each time sells all of her furniture and curtains and buys everything new to fit to a new theme. So wasteful!

I think an evolved room, not pre - planned down to the minutest detail can be a lovely thing.

picturesandpickles · 15/05/2021 19:55

We don't think much about colour, but things tend to stay fairly harmonious because the things we like are similar in tone.

But I have some things that are a bit incongrous, I wouldn't get rid of something older that I like because the colour was wrong.

Someone once gave me a pan because it didn't match their new kitchen colour palette and I was pretty Confused about that.

Bluesheep8 · 16/05/2021 07:33

There isn't an actual set colour scheme in my house but there is a colour type iyswim. All the rooms are painted in light neutral/pastel colours from pale greige to pale blue to pale pink. I like the way the colours look when all the doors are open and the colours are seen together but they are all different from eachother.

Kdubs1981 · 16/05/2021 07:57

Me! I love an eclectic look and each room is different with its own personality

coffeefi · 16/05/2021 08:26

Personally I wouldn't worry

Just move in and use existing furniture

Once settled and you can slowly review room
By room and update furniture then and when you can afford

alloverthecarpetagain · 16/05/2021 13:34

Right then, I won't overthink this. I will just do non-matchy, quirky as I like and just do what I want with what I have. Thank you all for sharing what you do and reassuring me that it will be okay and even stylish and on trend maybe!

@Cocolapew

I just stick things together, if I like it I find a place for it. There's probably an element of a scheme because I obviously like the same sort of stuff, but nothing really matches.
Yes, this. My house is filled with things I like, then whatever it is tends to fit in somewhere because it's all similar stuff?!
thelegohooverer · 17/05/2021 12:55

We had a house colour scheme when we moved in 15 years ago - shades of magnolia, peach and yellow.

We’ve never had the money to redo everything at once so bits get changed as needed. Some rooms are a bit more updated than others. Eclectic would be too kind.

I used to long for those lovely houses on Pinterest with a whole house colour scheme until it dawned on me that I’d have to impose my taste on my dc. Or try to incorporate ds’ passion for fire engine red.

Dh is old enough to think a house all painted one colour was done on the cheap with a job lot of paint and can’t be convinced otherwise.

Ha! That's not really the look I'm going for!

Judging from my intensive trawling of RightMove over the years most people don't have the slightest interest in interior design.

RockPainting · 17/05/2021 14:14

We have neutral floors everywhere and white walls.

Suite of oak furniture in 3 rooms downstairs - brought from our previous house.

All matching (white) furniture in the bedrooms - had to buy new as nothing fitted from the old house.

Matching white blinds throughout.

It's not quite finished but loads of meaningful pictures, artwork, nice lamps, plants, a couple of rugs, nice chairs, nik naks - basically everything has a lovely texture. Lots of colour but nothing too bright or gawdy.

You almost don't notice that it's white everywhere and instead I think you see the nice things.

It's very restful and cosy actually, stylish but not 'trendy' as such.

3orangekissesfromkazan · 17/05/2021 21:33

My taste is very eclectic, and my house mirrors that.

I love bright colours, ethnic fabrics and have a mix of mid-century and country cottage style furniture that I have collected over the years, all antique/second hand.

People walk into my living room and have lots to look at! It's probably not to everyone's taste but I find my style comes to me rather than the other way around, and anyone who knows me would be able to see I inhabit a space, if that makes sense.

My house is Edwardian, with a mix of old and very modern style.

MooseBreath · 17/05/2021 22:51

I don't have a colour scheme, though I prefer bold colours and jewel tones. My house is definitely not matchy-matchy, but looks put together in that I choose things with the particular space in mind. As long as it feels like home to you, it doesn't matter!

You are so right, no matter what the price bracket of the property! I get my interiors fix from looking at luxury holiday homes online instead.
SushiGo · 17/05/2021 23:25

I am glad you're just going to go with your own taste.

Our furniture is very mismatched and I am always working around that because I don't want to buy new furniture just for the sake of it. Sometimes that means the right colours/extra furniture etc take a long time to come to me, but it works. (And its never matchy matchy!)

Our new

alloverthecarpetagain · 18/05/2021 08:07

I love that so many people have quirky and non matchy homes, that's really nice. We have also trawled Rightmove a lot prior to finding our new house and I agree, few people have any sort of plan or interest in any plan for their rooms. It's sometimes difficult to discuss with people IRL because you might not like what their 'look' is and vice versa. Someone once said to me just after we had moved house (from Victorian to new build), 'well the house is lovely and modern, but it's all the same old stuff in it...' which I found really quite rude, though it was true!

ceilingsand · 19/05/2021 22:52

Mostly white walls IS a colour scheme, even with different bold feature walls or accents.

JaninaDuszejko · 21/05/2021 02:23

Looking at rightmove I think the majority of people just buy fairly cheap uninteresting furniture. The people who buy all new stuff every 5 years are in the minority, I know no-one who does that and those that have genuinely good taste are even rarer. Influencers get lots of free products and their constant updating is just advertising the latest freebie they've got. It's good for inspiration and particularly for working out what you don't like but the photos tend to be busy and no-one really lives like that.

But, for example, we bought our house a couple of years ago. There are several bathrooms and one was done not long before we bought the house and has lovely marble tiles and a nice suite so I have no plans to replace it anytime soon but the walls were painted magnolia and it looked a bit dull so I looked at instagram for ideas about colours etc and then chose wallpaper I liked, and freshened up the paintwork. The country MIL is from is famous for its handmade mirrors and so we found a supplier on etsy. So we've kept the suite but made the room more to our taste with wallpaper and made it personal with a handcrafted mirror.

The DDs room we painted the room white and most of the furniture is stuff we already had: the beds, the chest of drawers, the bedside table, a wall clock and a lampshade. Any additional furniture and fittings we needed is a mix of vintage and new and we haven't chucked anything out. I think if you buy stuff you love then it naturally goes together and evolves as you move house or change around how you use your house. And if nothing matches then it's easy to move things around.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 21/05/2021 03:03

for whom do you want your house to look nice/cozy/lovely/harmonious/eclectic etc?
others? that just never gonna work as everyone's taste is differen, some will like, some will not.
you? then just do whatever you want.
it's your house, your choice. it doesn't have to be or have to have anything you don't want.

we have a lot of colours.
mainly my ideas & suggestions that were tweaked & approved by affected family members.
I have a great eye for colour & colour combos and love bold shades so unless very garish DH is usually happy with my choices.
We have a ridiculously pink shade inside the airing cupboard because the very idea made us laugh and so it just had to be.
