Has anyone ever found a sofa bed that’s actually comfortable as a bed?

Hi.
In an attempt to make some more living space we’re thinking about turning our downstairs spare bedroom into another seating area. But still need to be able to put guests up.
Has anyone ever got a sofa bed that is actually comfortable both as a sofa and a bed? It won’t be used as a bed more than 5 or 6 times a year, but elderly parents need to be comfy!
Thanks for any advice.

The ikea corner one. My brother has one and I have slept on it when I stayed with him. Its so comfy! My parents in their mid 70s sleep on it too.

I like the futon company ones as the mattresses are more substantial than most sofa beds, plus when they go you can replace them instead of having to replace the whole thing.

Our IKEA one is comfy too. Can't remember the name of it, I'm afraid.

I second the Ikea corner one, my sister has one and it's really comfy to sit and sleep on.

Ikea lyksele.

It’s not very comfy as a sofa though!

We have a day bed that has a proper single mattress and then a bunch of cushions to make it like a sofa.

Made.com haru

It's pretty lumpy as a sofa but great as a sofa bed

RogueV · 02/05/2021 20:08

Glad you said that @WaltzingBetty as we ordered the Haru from made.com a few weeks ago!

A proper fold out says bed like the IKEA Vimle is much more comfortable as both a sofa and a bed, but rather expensive

Thanks everyone! You’ve given me food for thought....

Tbh it's not bad as a sofa, just rather firm at the edges but good as a bed

Futon Company is the winner - extremely comfy as a bed AND a sofa. Ikea ones make rubbish sofas.

SmednotaSmoo · 03/05/2021 06:20

We have an IKEA Farlov sofa bed., it has a thick mattress and is comfy as a sofa.

HighNetGirth · 03/05/2021 07:00

The solution is to have a mattress topper to put on the sofa bed mattress.

Really helpful thread, thanks. I'm currently on the hunt myself. Does anyone have an IKEA Nyhamn? I thought these might be good because they have proper mattresses rather than sofa cushions.

We have exactly the same issue as OP. Currently have a downstairs guest room with a king sized bed used once a year by my in-laws. I'm angling to change it to a TV room but unsure about sofa beds.

We had an ikea corner one before and not only was it uncomfortable, the bed it made was tiny. My in-laws won't sleep on anything smaller than a king size...

WorkWorkAngelica · 10/05/2021 08:11

It was an IKEA Friheten we had. It is one of the cheaper ones maybe that is the problem.

I keep seeing adverts for cocoon sofa beds which fold out to a sprung king sized mattress so if anyone has any experience of them I'd be grateful!

whoami24601 · 10/05/2021 08:12

We had an IKEA Friheten and it was brilliant. It is ace as a sofa and the bed it makes is a large double. Super easy to get out and put away and has storage for your bedding. Though my advice if you're only using it a few times a year would be to store bedding somewhere else as it starts to smell if it's under the sofa and not aired.

WorkWorkAngelica · 10/05/2021 08:14

We gave away our IKEA Friheten as we hated it! 😂

PandoraP · 10/05/2021 08:19

IKEA HEMNES

I looked recently and Ideal Home have just done a feature.

The most comfortable one that I found was made by Furl, they were expensive, but comfortable and very easy to use. Definitely the one I would choose. Having tried it and laid on it, it felt sturdy and was like a normal mattress.

TheTelegraph also did a review and they recommended one made by John Lewis.

We are getting rid of our Relyon sofa bed, having had it for nearly 20 years. It has been absolutely amazing. Used pretty much daily as a very comfortable sofa, and folds out into a really comfortable 10cm deep sprung bed, just 4cm narrower than a double bed.

I’ve googled to see if they make them anymore and I don’t think they do. A shame, as it has been amazing.

I can’t even give it away for free round here!
