What should I put over my fireplace?

Currently decorating the living room and need something for over the fire. Low cupboard being built in empty alcove so wall will be quite bare without something. In a cottage but with fairly high ceilings. Any ideas would be great. TIA

Agree mirror is always a good option

It looks from the picture that light from window hits that wall? In which case a mirror is a great option.

I'd have a mirror the same size as the brick fireplace.

I'd go with with mirror as well but if the room is light and bright maybe a lovely painting.

A mirror is the obvious option, make it a tall wide one to brighten the room and make it look bigger. A picture is second best in my opinion.
NOT a large TV though....I've seen it done and it always looks dreadful!!

I have a mirror above mine and it looks good. Not particularly practical though as I'm 5ft2 and can't actually see in it

Window mirror, maybe an arched one.

Thanks all, think it's probably going to be a mirror. The light does hit that wall and I'm thinking something big. Any other less conventional ideas would still be appreciated too.

I would do a gallery wall, with a small mirror and clock stuck in with the pictures.

You can't go wrong with a stuffed head over a fireplace.
If you aren't a proficient hunter fake it:

Mirror

A massive over mantle mirror, as wide as the wooden sill over the fireplace.

Next sell a nice highland cow head

Mirror. Or absolutely anything other than a TV, which just looks hideous imo.
