Calling all F&B experts! Opinions needed...

Hello all!
I've gone snowblind from looking at my Farrow & Ball colour swatch thingy for too long. We're doing a big reno to our kitchen diner which involves knocking a wall, creating a big open plan space and putting in a lot of glass to bring more light into the space. It is east facing so somewhat tricky to pick colours for. I'm settled on Hague blue for the island and I'm trying to pick a neutral for the wall cabinets - current contender is Shaded White with Wimborne (colour match) for the walls but I'm not sure... Also looking at Skimming Stone. What is your experience with east facing rooms? Help!

F&B Slipper Satin is a nice warm neutral.

Have you got a load of testers in? Little Greene have some nice neutrals too.

Hi - you may find it simpler to consider if generally speaking that room could be described as having lighting which is abundant, moderate or dim?

Probably moderate or dim?

For dimly lit rooms, you can either embrace the darkness or choose colours with more Chroma (colourfulness) than you might normally choose, even in the realm of whites.

So I think Wimborne White/Simply White are a potential good shout in such a space.

All colours are best chosen after viewing in situ though (board x 2 coats) so you can move them around in both dimly & better lit areas.

Thanks @colette100 and @dohdohdoh - i'm going to take a look at Slipper Satin too and maybe Shadow White which is a shade lighter than Shaded White. The Skimming Stone looks good with artificial light but has a real pinkness to it which looks wrong in daylight.

I'd say there's moderate light in the space, even in the morning with dim light in the afternoon.

I have a North east facing kitchen and spent months picking my colours! I have slipper satin and its perfect, very warm and neutral.

If skimming stone is pulling pink for you, both shadow white and shaded white will have a better chance if not doing as they sit further away from the Yellow-Red Hue family by comparison.

@colette100 thanks! That's a huge help. I'm going to get my hands on some testers this weekend and see how I get on.

Skimming Stone and Ammonite both come up VERY grey for me, in rooms of different aspects. I can only conclude it’s the northern light here or perhaps the greenery outside.

I know they are some of the most popular F and B neutrals.

@I0NA. That’s a really useful bit if information to hold on to.

The truth is Ammonite + Cornforth White are quite greyed.
Too grey - is so personal + as you say, also relative to the quality of light available in conjunction with the colour.

If they are too greyed for you, but you like the idea of them, it tells us that a similar colours but with more Chroma would fit your needs & situation more.

These colours are in the same Hue Family neighbourhood as those mentioned, but also have more Chroma than either.

How much more Chroma feels adequate in your situation, would be personal to you.

P.s. anyone looking for the Dulux colour , use the code, not the name. The code is part of their excellent international system for organising colours. The names are localised, so maybe different country to country.

Yes in my house these two F & B colours look too dark and too blue. So I think I need lighter and warmer - is that right ?

I had a F&B colour expert come round and she suggested Hague Blue with Schoolhouse White or Wimborne White on the walls for our East facing kitchen. We actually ended up having a more taupey colour on the kitchen itself so didn’t use the ideas but the swatches/testers looked great.

We did use Slipper Satin on the walls which is great, sort of soft white chocolate. I used in in a west facing room before in a different house and disliked it as it looked Magnolia.

I have shaded white in my sitting room. Love that it is neither grey nor beige. If anything very slightly green. I find it both warm and elegant

Wimborne is very yellow in my house and skimming stone (like great white) pulls pink. Cornforth is very purple. Ammonite is a warm grey in my dual aspect bedroom where the fabrics are all creams beiges and linens but a much cooler grey in my dressing room even though it’s south facing.

You have to try in situ.

What colour is in the same hue family as slipper satin but a little less colourful (let’s say half way between farrow and ball all white and slipper satin.

I've done two houses with (nearly all) walls and woodwork in Wimborne White, windows pointing all directions, and it worked everywhere - it's a good, slightly warmish white.
