Valspar or Johnstone's?

Is there a clear winner which is better paint quality for colour matching? I tend to see Johnstone's reccomended more often than Valspar, but if there isn't much in it I have gift vouchers for B&Q... I'm wanting F&B and Little Greene colour matches.

I have just done my DC bedroom in valspar and it’s crap, it’s been on the walls for 3 months and already it’s marked and needs touching up, I’m seriously unimpressed with it.
I have little Greene elsewhere and it’s brilliant, goes on easily and easy to wipe down, I wish I’d splashed out for that instead.

We got valspar few years ago and it's shit. Really poor coverage, streaky finish. Needed about 3 coats. There's a reason it's cheap.

Now we go to the Dulux trade place and it's £££ but the paint is just brilliant.

Baldpate is the one that had a preservative problem a while back isn’t it? People had huge problems, stripping back and redecorating because after a while the paint reeked of fish and B&Q weren’t that helpful.

Valspar!

standingonaseesaw · 02/04/2021 03:59

I’ve always found Valspar really good. Really good coverage, and durable. And nice to paint with.

Johnstone's trade paint is excellent used for years. With all paints there is a difference between what you buy in B&Q and the trade version

TeeBee · 02/04/2021 04:51

Johnstone's is brilliant at colour matching. I use the Online Decorating Centre. Excellent service.

user64332 · 02/04/2021 12:57

This is probably a stupid question, but if I go to a shop that sells Johnstone's with a colour match service, is that the same as trade paint? There is a shop that sells it locally. Or maybe I should just order online?

Ask them. It has Johnstone's trade on the tin

Redsquirrel5 · 04/04/2021 23:39

Just had our hall painted the decorator told us to go to Johnstone’s we have a small trade centre. We found the staff very knowledgeable too.

GreyhoundG1rl · 05/04/2021 00:33

Not Valspar, it's seriously crap.

Lazypuppy · 05/04/2021 00:34

Love valspar!

Africa2go · 05/04/2021 00:35

Just Google Valspar. Its honestly awful paint.

somuchpainouch · 05/04/2021 00:38

Valspar, but only if you get the premium finish.

PennyArcade · 05/04/2021 00:43

Johnson’s without a doubt. Valstone pant is rubbish!

Lonelycrab · 05/04/2021 06:37

Johnstones by a mile. You won’t find many pros recommending Valspar.

Valspar had an awful reputation for the smell thing mentioned above. Possibly better now but I had a tin of their undercoat that was literally like painting with milk.

NoLactose · 05/04/2021 06:40

How does Tikkurila compare???

drpet49 · 05/04/2021 07:21

Avoid Valspar like the plague. Awful coverage

ItsSnowJokes · 05/04/2021 07:26

I bought the premium (v700) Valspar paint and I was shocked at just how poor the coverage was. The colour matching was also so appalling we managed to get a refund on it as the manager agreed it was obviously a mistake.

I stick to dulux easycare range now. Can be scrubbed for any marks.

Glittertwins · 05/04/2021 08:51

We have Valspar in two rooms, not the colour matched ones but no problem with them marking and streaky finish. We had a decorator do it for us though so that might have made a difference. He didn't like putting it on as it took an age to dry but there is no problem with the end result.
