What to do with a dark brown carpet

Apart from rip it up!

I’ve just moved into a new house which has dark brown carpet in both bedrooms. I can’t afford to replace it right now so have to work with it.

So suggestions please for wall colours?

The ceiling and woodwork are white and the door is oak.

There’s a large Ikea mirrored wardrobe along one wall, the window takes up most of the second wall and the bed and bedside tables fill the third wall.

That’s pretty much it really. A boring bog standard bedroom with an even more boring carpet 🙁

A huge rug? Try irugs.com

Yes or could you make it kind of boudoir-y with some nice rich colours?

speakout · 25/03/2021 21:55

What is underneath?

Could you pull back a corner and have a look?

Colour match the carpet as best you can to a paint chart, and check out the contrasting or complimentary colours that well known brands suggest on the web pages.

F&B do this, as do Dulux, I'm sure - so will others.

It should provide you with colour schemes that don't clash and that you may not have thought of.

I would paint all the walls white, that might freshen it up.

What is underneath is underlay and then cheap basic floorboards ( it’s a modern house ).

I’d buy a very very large rug and cover it up. Irugs do some excellent over sized ones.

Thank you for that suggestion on paint colours @jazzandh. I’ve just tried a couple and they suggest various shades of pinky beige ( not good with oak door and anyway I hate beige even more than brown ).

Or green and red, which was interesting !

I’ll try a few more.

Depends what your tastes are. You could go orange or green on one wall and head to the 70's. Or Orla keirly patterns if you want a modern look.

I’d prefer something more relaxing than orange and green.

I think oranges could look fab! Or maybe terracotta, just rugs and lots of plants?

Maybe order some different duvet covers and see if that gives you any sparks/ideas. You can then return the ones that don't work.

If you want a colour "for now" use magnolia? Or a similar creamy pale colour with warmth and a hint of brown eg barley white by Dulux?

Thanks for so many good ideas. I never thought of ordering lots of duvet covers to try.
