What do I cover carpet with to paint?

I can't use a dust sheet can I? Surely it will bleed through?

I've got really expensive new carpets and need to paint the walls (I know i should have done this first but we weren't able to).

How do I do it? Eek

Plastic sheeting with dust sheet on top?

RMRM · 24/03/2021 12:04

You can buy stick on plastic rolls like this :

I had never seen them before some decorators came to work on our rental house. They worked really well. ( I don't know if it was this brand though!).

Seconding the protection roll - it's brilliant

^ link isn't working sorry. www.screwfix.com/p/no-nonsense-carpet-protection-roll-25m-x-500mm/72304

Plastic sheeting like above (but check it's suitable for your carpet, you need a special one for higher wool percentages). Then put dust sheets on top.

Be aware when leaving the painting area - check shoes/feet before leaving the protected area.

Take up protection asap once painting is finished, much easier to fix slight marks before they dry.

Hi.Screwfix sell dust sheets with plastic protective backing in all sizes Just used the huge ones in my house and nothing gets through.Used the no-nonsense sticky stuff on the stairs....too expensive and wasteful for a whole room. You can use the dust sheets again and again.

randomsabreuse · 26/03/2021 09:42

I used the sticky rolls everywhere for painting ceilings as I'm incapable of not making a mess doing that but for just walls I used the sticky roll around the edges and the loose dust sheets (with the plastic back) in the middle of the room after an incident with the dust sheet shifting when needed most. I also masking taped dust sheets to skirting boards after that point.

The sticky roll is great if you have pets; it pulls all kinds of hair and fluff out of the corners, like a giant lint roller or waxing strips!
