What to do with my 2 large mirrors?

I have 2 of these large (1.5 * 1m) mirrors in my small-ish lounge. They are made locally with reclaimed wood. I bought them for the lounge in my previous house to increase the light, and now need to decide whether to keep them. An interior designer told me she thought they were too chunky and heavy for the room which she described as otherwise "pretty and delicate". She suggested mirrors with narrow metallic frames instead. I could sell these mirrors and buy something else, but I'm wondering whether painting them a lighter colour would be an option and, if so, what type of paint I should use. The wood has a lot of texture to it, and has been varnished to make a feature of that, so I don't want to paint them unless I'm pretty sure it will look good. I know some people might suggest a "distressed" look but I'm not a fan of that and it wouldn't really be in-keeping with the rest of the house.

I'm going to follow this thread as I'm in the same position- I'm planning to paint mirror frames tomorrow.

We had a similar mirror which we painted in Mizzle (farrow & ball pale sagey green). It still looked “rustic” if you looked closely due to all the texture but it was a much lighter prettier look.

I can’t help with the actual painting though sorry as a decorator did it for us. It certainly wasn’t emulsion paint - probably sanded, used a primer and then eggshell/satinwood I would guess.

Will see if I can find a pic of the painted mirror.

I have just painted two wooden mirror frames with Frenchchic chalk mineral paint in Duckling. I am really pleased with the result - they look far less dark and heavy.

Sound interesting. Any chance of a photo?
