Narrow entry way ideas please

The hall from the front door to the stairs is 1 X 4 m. It's painted white and I don't really know what to do with it as it's bland. I have a couple of pictures and a hanging plant. I don't want to crowd it too much as it's so narrow.

I have a long jute runner. There is a door leading off the hall and I have used that for coats which leaves the whole of the other side just plain white. I'm thinking of putting a shelf with hooks for coats on the wall and then putting a diffuser and a couple of pictures either on the shelf or along one side. Not sure if that will create an obstacle to navigate around as I walking in and out the door.

Any ideas?

We'd need pics or a diagram at least!!

Mine is similar though. I keep the door off the hall open, and have some shoe storage in that area with a nice shelf, diffuser etc above.

We have neutral walls but a patterned floor tile. I've thought about doing a dado rail with a darker colour below and probably will when time allows!
