Which wallpaper works best?

Sunsetsandroses · 27/02/2021 14:44

We have recently moved and want to decorate. My husband wants wallpaper over paint, because he would prefer a pattern over plain colour.
We have the attached samples currently, what do you think? The floor is oak, and fireplace marble. It will only be for the one wall, the others will be in a matching neutral. The picture frame that you can see isn't staying, it's up for sizing reasons currently.
Personally I quite like olive green, but I'm not having much luck finding a paper in that colour which I like. If anyone has any recommendations I would be grateful.

I like the trellis 3rd one down on 1st picture

MutteringDarkly · 27/02/2021 17:08

I like the bottom left in your second photo - gives you the broadest choices about other colours to use in the room, so if you refresh other items in a few years, the paper could still work.

Primotomb · 28/02/2021 09:57

Another vote for bottom left in 2nd photo.

Bluntness100 · 28/02/2021 09:59

Honestly, none of them op, they look inexpensive and dated, just google olive green wallpaper, there are so many beautiful wallpapers out there now, and most places send free samples.

wintertime6 · 28/02/2021 10:07

I'm sorry but I agree with a pp, I think they all look really dated and I don't think I could live with any of them in my living space, especially not the top and bottom ones in the first photo. If I really had to pick one, I'd go for the second one from the top in the first photo.

Tavannach · 28/02/2021 14:08

This is on offer, might be a bit too olive.

Bluntness100 · 28/02/2021 14:17

Op what’s your budget per roll?

jazzandh · 28/02/2021 14:17

What style of house do you have, and what style do you like to decorate in? I too would look for "olive green wallpaper" - there are some beautiful ideas, but some are classic, some period patterns, some floral, some modern.

Bluesheep8 · 02/03/2021 14:43

I don't like any of them tbh, all look dated to me.

NoSquirrels · 02/03/2021 14:47

That’s lovely!

OP, search through that site - wallpaperdirect - can spend ages looking at the designs on there and search via colour, style etc.

If I absolutely had to choose one of your samples, I’d have the ikat-style diamonds in grey, bottom right of photo 2.

I meant to reply yesterday but forgot to click send.
I'm not massively a fan of any of them, my husband wants a pattern hence the wallpaper. I prefer plain honestly. I wouldn't mind a slightly textured wallpaper but I don't want something with too much pattern.
I like along the lines of these I think, but more olive-y in tone. I would like to feel them so need to order samples. Does anyone have any experience of the websites?
1 dark green
2 blue green
3 stripe
4 sage green

If you like green then I'd go with something like this on one wall and then paint on all the other walls. If you're going to go with wallpaper then make a statement and make it a focal point otherwise its just blah.

You can then pick out the gold to maybe get some gold plant pots and some giant green plants to dress up the painted walls, or put up some shelves with trailing green plants on them.

DaVinyl · 02/03/2021 20:49

try wallpaperdirect.co.uk as PP said. I use them all the time and they are great. First 2 samples are free and after that 50p each. Think postage is free and they come in about 3-4 days. They are A4 size samples.

There are thousands of wallpapers on there. They always send a 10% off voucher with the samples too.

I’m not sure there’s much point in a plain wallpaper if your DH wants pattern!

You probably need to compromise on a small repeating pattern, that gives the impression from a distance of a more solid colour. Something like these?

We have this in navy. It's lovely paper. The pattern is subtle so the wall looks plain from some angles.

What about something like this, if he likes pattern and you like green.

Would you go for something like this? Brocade by Farrow and Ball (Green Smoke): www.farrow-ball.com/wallpaper/brocade

Sunsetsandroses · 03/03/2021 07:47

Thanks all, I've just ordered some samples. @NoSquirrels I quite like that Ash branch one.
Samples are due to arrive in a few days so will stick them up then and see if any jump out.

Sorry, none of the wallpapers have grabbed me. If you've got the time, I'd spend a few minutes (it'll be hours...) looking at wallpaperdirect.co.uk, their selection is fantastic. If you're after a plain colour, I don't think I'd bother papering, I'd just paint. I adore big bold prints, so would tend towards those myself for a feature wall, and then I'd be less worried about the cost, as you might only need a couple of rolls and paint for the rest of the room.

I'm desperate to have this somewhere, but it's not happened. I love that you can basically have it in any colour way (with a F&B paint colour that will tie in)and bold as brass or a bit more discreet: www.farrow-ball.com/wallpaper/lotus.

I'd also suggest browsing Pinterest to get an idea on patterns that you may like to help narrow down your search field too.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 04/03/2021 23:28

I tend to prefer subtle delicate patterns rather than big bold choices so I only like the grey and yellow leaf/spot pattern (on the first picture, second from top).

I like sage or teal greens too (Olive can sometimes look a bit dull/brown) but for me it's all about a small repeating pattern as pp mentioned, preferably a leaf or branch/vine type print - I like the wallpaperdirect ash branch one pp linked to.
