Which paint for my gate?

The wooden back gate in our new house was sticking so we've planed a bit off the side and now need to paint it.

I bought some midnight blue Roseal fence life plus which looked like a good colour match. The shed is painted the same colour so I assumed fence/shed paint was the right thing.

However when I've just tried to paint over the existing paint, the new paint is kind of just sitting on the surface and not 'sticking' if that makes sense. I've wiped the paint off and have looked on b&qu for an alternative but the choice of exterior paint is very poor.

What should I be looking for? The Ronseal is water based. Do I need something solvent based?

Your gate sounds like it is painted with oil based or acrylic based treatment. So your water based product can’t get in! The water based treatment would be fine for untreated wood. As it is, you will need acrylic or oil based for your gate. Unless you sand the gate very very very thoroughly, to remove the current layer which is repelling water.

I think you could prime the gate with zinsser 123 and then just paint whatever exterior wood paint you like on it.
