WWYD with this dressing table?

I have a dressing table in the garage that I finally have room for .... I got it on impulse from a Facebook post a while ago.

It's chipped / damaged and I'm not sure whether to have it restored or change completely and go for a bespoke painted / design service. It's going in an attic dressing room that has new but classic looking fitted furniture - white walls, dark wood floors and walnut drawers.

I'm attaching a photo of dressing table in the house it came from (not where it's going to be) and the type of painted furniture I mean. DH likes the painted option as he is worried the original is too frumpy/nana.

I think that would look nice painted, OP. Perhaps not black, like your example photo - yours is a lot chunkier than that one, and I think if you did it with a dark colour it would look heavy. How about painting it cream? Or maybe pale blue?

I'm not wild about the mirror. It's very large: it looks a bit overwhelming. I think it would look nicer with a smaller freestanding mirror.

I would restore it if you are having wood floors and drawers, it wont take much to do but I would replace the mirror. Is it solid wood.

If it's a genuine wooden Art Deco style I would replace the mirror with an oval one,

I'd have it go at spraying it copper and then I'd probably have to take it to a professional to restore it.

I’d restore that, don’t paint it like the black one, it will ruin it.

DianaT1969 · 19/02/2021 17:54

Restore it, don't paint it. Get rid of the mirror as I doubt that's the original mirror.
Without a mirror it would look good as a desk and you'll probably get more use out of a desk. Who sits at dressing tables these days?

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions and sorry for not replying earlier - I wasn't being rude just had loads of trouble with the MN app.

I am going to restore it, not paint - and also talk to the furniture restorer about the mirror. I'm looking forward to having a dressing table! :)

I'd paint it with off white chalk paint. I have a lot of dark wood furniture but it's that beautiful a piece in wood and will take a lot of work to restore. I'd therefore stay with a subtle chalk paint effect and wax.
