Large dark hall. What colour on wood panelling?

We have quite a big T shaped hall, but it’s dark North facing. It still has the original 1927 wood panelling, up to picture rail height, currently painted white.

What colour should we paint it? And the wall above? Definitely not cream. We did that when we first moved in, and looked like a smokers palace, so quickly changed it to white.

Also, eggshell, satin or gloss?

Any suggestions gratefully received. We are getting new flooring/carpet so open to suggestions on that too!

I would go for Teal or duck egg blue for the wood panelling and cafe latte for the walls above the picture rail. However, if you are going to display art on the walls (which I would if I had a wood-panelled hall) I would be picking out an accent shade that appears in one or more of the pictures, and matching a paint colour to that (or a paler shade of it)

A pale bluey grey or greeny grey on the panelling? With a lighter tone on the walls.

I would put a multicoloured pastel-based paper above the paneling and pick a pastel shade that appears in the paper for the paneling.

Depends on the colour of the floor / carpet / front door etc? Or are you planning on a full re-vamp? Have a look at frenchic alfresco paint, lovely on woodwork, dries quick and doesn't chip. i've found that water based satinwood chips easily and the oil based takes forever to dry and looks shinny.

Can you strip it back to the original wood?
