What size/shape/colour mirror would you put above this fireplace?

Hi mumsnet,
I’ve just been dissuaded from putting the tv above this fireplace.
It’s a really dark room ( north facing) so a mirror is now the preferred option.
I’d love ideas on size and shape - I was thinking something a bit sparkly for the frame.
I thought maybe a full oval? Or gentle hexagon? Something to break up the squareness....

It’s still hard to say as you can’t see much of the room to decide what would look right.

ImsorryWilson · 06/02/2021 17:00

Will take more pics honey.
I appreciate you reading.

I thought maybe this?

Ive just posted on your other thread 🤣
I think there’s not enough height to put anything above the fireplace - it would just look odd! At a pinch, a rectangular mirror that’s almost as wide as the fireplace. How about having a narrow wooden shelf for you to put some interesting ornaments on, or a clock?

Soontobe60 · 06/02/2021 17:03

That mirror you’ve linked is awful!! It’s very modern and you’ve got a lovely old stone fireplace and wood burner. I think it would clash horribly.

ImsorryWilson · 06/02/2021 17:05

Slightly wider perspective......
I’m only just beginning to decorate. We know the fireplace is staying as is to it makes sense to think about what that part of the room “wants” first...

In this pic there’s a rectangular mirror on floor. It didn’t look good when I held it up - too many rectangles....

I'd probably go for something either oval or asymmetric, no frills but maybe a real wood surround or pewter?

AlwaysLatte · 06/02/2021 17:10

Not too big either - nothing that would overlap the fire surround.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 06/02/2021 17:11

I think a narrow rectangular or long octagonal mirror would look good. Obvs don't know the dimensions, but would a full length mirror on its side work?

Sorry, I really don't like the one you've linked, too modern!

ImsorryWilson · 06/02/2021 17:12

Thanks always - the space above is rather wide and low.....just off to get measuring tape....

minipie · 06/02/2021 17:12

Something that matches the proportions of the space so something like this:

www.wayfair.co.uk/home-decor/pdp/borough-wharf-hollier-leaf-parisienne-metal-landscape-accent-mirror-hjme9522.html?piid=27899048

or maybe this www.nkuku.com/products/demsa-mirror-with-shelf-dm30?variant=16690997723234&gclid=Cj0KCQiAmfmABhCHARIsACwPRAD0iJ4AuDKcVP0canLNSZ47joCqYmnXwCpx4inXdmgYHUfus1p3LL0aApH7EALw_wcB as you can put plants and candles etc on the shelf and soften it - quite pricey though

Or for a bit of sparkle look for a vintage bevel edge oval mirror like
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/133633553198?mkevt=1&mkcid=28&chn=ps this one... Won’t fill the space as well but the proportions are right, I think.

I think the one you posted is too modern with that fireplace, personally

LadyEloise · 06/02/2021 17:12

The mirror you linked to is far too modern for that fireplace and stove.
Pine ( to match the pine chair ) rectangular mirror almost the size of the space above the mantel ?

minipie · 06/02/2021 17:16

Oh cross posted! The one you’ve got on the floor looks perfect in size. Yes ideally maybe it would have rounded corners but if you already have that one and the size is right then seems best to try to make it work?

You can soften the rectangular shape by draping something across it - are you a fairy light person? And/or by putting up a narrow shelf just under the mirror and having items on the shelf to break up the shape of the mirror iyswim. Trailing plants and candles/lanterns would look nice.

Soontobe60 · 06/02/2021 17:17

@TheLovleyChebbyMcGee the mirror you’ve linked to would be perfect! In fact, I’d like that in my bedroom 🤣

ImsorryWilson · 06/02/2021 17:18

84cm high, 190cm wide......
Fireplace opening 153cm....

ImsorryWilson · 06/02/2021 17:22

That Dunelm one is promising!

OP posts:
jellybe · 06/02/2021 17:23

I agree with @TheLovleyChebbyMcGee you need something like the mirror they have linked to as the one you linked to is too modern and doesn't go with the fireplace.

Are you planning on painting? What sort of colours/ style are you going for the rest of the room?

ImsorryWilson · 06/02/2021 17:31

Googling “long octagonal”

Jelly, It will be a main feature. This is our basement “den” ( hence dark and previous thoughts of tv over fireplace.....). The ceiling is low, the walls are plain, there are boiler/meter cupboards I may or may not be able to move..... so everything else will work round this nice fireplace.

Needs rehanging.
I’m minded to go for lovelychebby’s one - thank you!

OP posts:
TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 06/02/2021 18:59

No worries, it was one of the first that came up! I googled 'full length' mirrors and better choices came up than 'long'.

I'm fancying it myself tbh, just need to find a place for it!

ImsorryWilson · 06/02/2021 19:01

If it turns out not to hang sideways you might get a discount second hand one!

Am in love with the Piaggi stuff that will be next thread :)
