We're moving and this is going to be DS room. It's currently dark blue (which I love) but DS wants it white as he has some decals planned. The shutters are really nice though, so I wondered about painting those a different colour. Or the skirting boards maybe.

Open to any ideas for colours etc.

All white will be fine, especially once the decals are on the walls.

SlightlyJaded · 06/02/2021 01:02

Shutters and woodwork a deep blue/black like F&B Railings and maybe the walls an off white just to soften it?

Whatthebloodyell · 06/02/2021 17:26

I wouldn’t go painting the shutters.

Maybe leave the window wall the blue colour?

trickyex · 06/02/2021 19:27

Oh thats a shame its a lovely colour. Could you ask him to wait and see once he is in before deciding? Decals/pics look really good against a dark colour, much more than against white.

soundofsilence1 · 09/02/2021 16:44

White shutters help to reflect the light. I would not paint them a dark colour. The room looks lovely as it is. Could you persuade your son to leave one wall the blue colour and them paint the other walls white and add the decals to these?

MerryChristmasToYou · 09/02/2021 19:46

I'd keep the colour. It looks nice and you'll need a few coats of white.

Bouledeneige · 09/02/2021 23:10

Shame you have to decorate - it looks nice as it is. I'd definitely not paint the shutters and maybe only paint one wall white if he insists on needing it. As others have said it will take a lot of coats!

Boysarebackintown · 09/02/2021 23:19

Depends how old he is ? I’m very much it’s his room, his colour choice.

Kollamoolitumarellipawkyrollo · 09/02/2021 23:35

I agree that decals may look better on dark so may be worth just waiting a bit.

Even if the blue goes, I wouldn’t paint the shutters.

Catworrier · 09/02/2021 23:48

White wash with black framing. So black skirting and window sill etc. Or get him to style ideas from Pinterest

OhioOhioOhio · 10/02/2021 00:08

Yeah. How old is he?

cluelessupaladder · 14/03/2021 19:03

He is 11. We painted it stone white (F&B, very nice colour) but tbh he still isn't really warming to it. The room is really cold because it's an outside wall, so even when the rest of the house is warm it's chilly.

He really wanted a chair suspended from the ceiling and I said I would make it happen (we've rented for years so now we can actually do stuff) but apparently the ceiling isn't strong enough.

I loved it blue.

Anyway, I'm sorry for the delay. Thank you all so much for taking the time to post.

Is there another room he could have?
My DS2 had a room with two outside walls and in the end we swapped rooms around as he never settled there. He sleeps much better in his new room which is warmer.

Reinventinganna · 14/03/2021 22:13

Don’t paint the shutters and skirting!

cluelessupaladder · 14/03/2021 22:19

He has the choice of two rooms, the other is much warmer and marginally smaller. But squarer. His room is not symmetrical, the walls slant a lot (it's a very old house) which I think bothers him. But it has a lovely window onto the street, while the other one looks onto an interior courtyard.

He's being fussy because in our last house he had the biggest bedroom (because of a bathroom issue) so he had lots of space.

Argh, with the move and everything (new school) I really wanted him to love his bedroom. I wish I could do the hanging chair thing but if it's not going to be safe then what can you do.

What about something like this?

trickyex · 14/03/2021 22:53

Isnt it nicer to be in a warm room rather than a large room? Maybe try the other room and see if he settles better there?

cluelessupaladder · 15/03/2021 13:23

Thanks Oblio I've looked at those but the fun thing was having it hanging and not taking up floor space.
Trickyex, I agree, I'm sure he will end up there.

I bought some really cool lighting which I thought would win him over. He's acting out because of the move mainly.
